Cadets give back during The Citadel\u2019s Class of 1979 Leadership Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On The Citadel\u2019s Class of 1979 Leadership Day, cadets participated in a day of servant leadership. At dozens of locations, more than 1,100 freshman and sophomore cadets engaged in service activities across the Lowcountry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leadership Day marked the 14th year of the School Heroism Activity for Remembrance and Engagement program. SHARE, directed by Associate Professor of Psychology Lori Fernald<\/a>, sends over 150 trained sophomores and the entire freshman class to Charleston County elementary schools to deliver lessons on heroism. This year, cadets visited 13 schools and provided the curriculum to more than 4,000 elementary students. Graduate students in Fernald\u2019s school consultation course also honed their consultation skills by working with their assigned schools to plan logistics for the day. The program has provided valuable leadership experience to cadets and graduate students, while helping elementary students learn that true heroism is about putting others before themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophomore cadets traveled to several service locations in the Lowcountry to provide volunteer work for charitable and community organizations. Some of their work included helping assemble the Wall That Heals, a traveling Vietnam memorial, and building homes with Habitat for Humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior and senior cadets attended leadership and ethics seminars \u2014 both on campus and off \u2014 from federal and state agencies, museums, businesses and corporations across South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
