Professor Moreland served 45 years as a member of The Citadel\u2019s faculty (1964-2009), retiring with the rank of professor in 2009. He served as head of the Political Science department from 1999 to 2004 and has often remarked that he feels very fortunate to have played a part in the educations of the nearly 10,000 Citadel students who passed through his classes. A scholar as well as a teacher, Moreland has authored or coauthored nearly 50 journal articles and book chapters, as well as about 90 research studies presented at professional meetings; he has also coedited 15 books. Most of his research and publication focused on political parties, presidential elections, and southern politics.
