{"id":62,"date":"2022-06-29T08:26:53","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T12:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/physics\/?page_id=62"},"modified":"2025-04-07T13:35:45","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T17:35:45","slug":"minor-in-applied-climatology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/physics\/cadet-programs\/minor-in-applied-climatology\/","title":{"rendered":"Minor in Climate Resiliency and Environmental Sustainability Studies (CRESS)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-climate-resiliency-and-environmental-sustainability-studies-cress-minor\">Climate Resiliency and Environmental Sustainability Studies (CRESS) Minor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:60%\">\n<p>The minor in climate\u00a0resiliency and environmental sustainability studies is an interdisciplinary minor designed to help undergraduate students gain climate and environmental science literacy; develop an understanding of the interactions between climate and the natural environment and an appreciation of sustainability from a variety of perspectives such as business and engineering; and create and\/ or participate in a project related to local environmental and sustainability efforts.\u00a0 Students pursuing the minor will have the opportunity to take a variety of classes addressing climate resiliency and environmental sustainability studies culminating in a capstone course.\u00a0 The capstone course will provide the students a chance to build upon their previous coursework in the minor through a semester long research project, service-learning activity or internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This minor is housed within The Citadel&#8217;s Physics Department and is closely tied to the Biology Department, allowing students to gain interdisciplinary insights into climate science. The minor is also associated with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/ssm\/climate-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Near Center for Climate Studies<\/a><\/strong>, a center dedicated to research and innovation in climate science, and led by Prof. Scott Curtis, a faculty member in the Physics Department.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/brittlebank_group-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Minor in CRESS event\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/heat_image.png\" alt=\"climate map\" style=\"width:550px;height:350px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-potential-students\">Potential Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The minor may be appropriate for undergraduate students from all five schools who are interested in climate, the environment and sustainability.\u00a0 Possible areas of interest could include climate hazard mitigation, climate\u00a0adaptation, sustainable agriculture, environmental degradation, supply chain sustainability, environmental history or environmental economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-requirements\">Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To complete a minor in sustainability and environmental studies, students must take a <strong>minimum of 15 credit hours <\/strong>from the approved list of courses listed below. At least 9 credit hours must be completed at The Citadel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-required-courses\">Required Courses<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Must take both of the 209\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Environmental Science<\/a>\u00a0Credit Hours: 3<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.citadel.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=14&amp;poid=911&amp;hl=climate&amp;returnto=search\">PHYS 343\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Applied Climatology<\/a>\u00a0Credit Hours: 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Must take:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Capstone Course: Including <a
