Dr. Horton is a graduate of Medical University of SC where she earned her PhD in Nursing/Clinical Research. Her master of science degree was earned from Columbia University NYC with a major in Nurse-Midwifery. She earned her bachelor of science and associate in science degree both nursing majors from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Farmingdale respectively.
Dr. Horton has been practicing clinically for a a total of 36 years. Of these she has been a nurse-midwife for 30 years in which time she has held both administrative and faculty roles for the Medical University of South Carolina. Her teaching experience includes the education of students of nursing, nurse-midwifery, physician assistants, medical students as well as first and second year OB/GYN residents.
She has over 25 years total experience as a clinical instructor, instructor, as well as assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is the immediate past Nurse Midwifery program director at the Medical University of South Carolina. Her expertise includes midwifery, women’s health, family centered nursing, clinical practice issues, leadership, and health policy.
She is associated with National Amercian College of Nurse-Midwives and has earned several past honors including 2011 and 2012 Golden Lamp Teaching Award, 2010 Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award, 2010 South Carolina Council of Deans and Directors Scholarship, and 2009 Ruth Chamberlain Scholarship.
Before joining the faculty at The Citadel, she held the position of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program Director for South University Online as an associate professor. Her teaching expertise for South University included Research Methods (MSN), Women’s Health (MSN), Organization and Systems Leadership Nsg (DNP), DNP Field Experiences, and DNP Scholarly Project Courses and Committee Chair. She is a devoted teacher and asset to The Citadel’s Swain Nursing Department.
