Objectives<\/em><\/strong>:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This minor is designed to allow a student not majoring in mathematics to learn techniques of applied mathematics and to be exposed to a variety of mathematical modeling techniques.  Students are expected to have completed one of the calculus sequences MATH 131\/132 or HONR 131\/132 to be eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competencies, Knowledge or Skills to be achieved<\/em><\/strong>:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student who completes this minor will have a sound foundation in techniques of linear algebra and differential equations, and will have utilized these techniques in at least one area of application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Structure of the Minor<\/em><\/strong>:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Required courses<\/strong>:  (10 credit hours<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    MATH 234 \u2013 Applied Engineering Mathematics I (every semester, shared with CIVL, ELEC, MECH & PHYS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    MATH 240 \u2013 Linear Algebra (every spring) or<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                         MATH 206 \u2013 Discrete Mathematics (every fall, share with CS & COME) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    MATH 470 \u2013 Mathematical Models and Applications (every fall) or<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  approved MATH 490 \u2013 Advanced Topics in Mathematics<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Electives<\/strong> (6 credit hours<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      MATH 381 \u2013 Deterministic Methods of Operations Research (fall, 2020, 2022, 2024)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      MATH 382 \u2013 Probabilistic Methods of Operations Research (spring, 2021, 2023, 2025)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      MATH 451 \u2013 Graph Theory (spring, 2021, 2023, 2025)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Approved MATH 390 – Topics in Mathematics <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Approved MATH 490 \u2013 Advanced Topics in Mathematics <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      STAT 261 \u2013 Introduction to Probability and Statistics (every spring) or ELEC 412 but not both<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      STAT 366 \u2013 Applied Statistics (every fall)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      STAT 461 \u2013 Data Analysis (every spring)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Total Credit Hours Required:  16, at least 9 of which must be completed at The Citadel or in a Citadel Study Abroad Program, at least 12 of which must be beyond core curriculum and courses specified for major or other minor requirements and at least 6 of which must be at the 300\/400 level.  At least 9 hours of the minor must be organized in a logical sequence of required courses which provides general direction for the student\u2019s study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        (c) ELEC 412  \u2013 Applied Probability and Statistics<\/p>\n\n\n\n
