Colonel Giles R. Boyce graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and was commissioned in 1993.
After graduating from The Basic School and the Infantry Officers Course in 1994, Lieutenant Boyce was assigned to First Battalion, First Marines, First MARDIV, where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Combined Anti-Armor Team Platoon Commander, and 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander. He deployed with the 15th MEU in 1995, and the 13TH MEU in 1997.
In 1998, Captain Boyce reported to The Basic School in Quantico, VA where he served as a Staff Platoon Commander and an Infantry Officer Course instructor. In 2001, Captain Boyce reported to Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, First MARDIV in Twentynine Palms, CA. He served as Rifle Company Commander, Weapons Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer. He deployed under the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa Japan in 2001, OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in 2003, and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (2) in 2004.
In September 2004, Major Boyce reported to Training and Education Command, Quantico, VA where he served in the G-3 until 2007. In the summer of 2007, he reported to Marine Corps Command and Staff College; he graduated in June 2008. In 2008, Major Boyce reported as the Executive Officer to Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, First MARDIV and deployed to OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in 2008-2009. In the summer of 2009 he was reassigned to the Tactical Training Exercise Control Group, Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in October 2009.
In the summer of 2011 Lieutenant Colonel Boyce assumed command of the Advanced Infantry Training Battalion at the School of Infantry – East. He relinquished command in June 2013 and reported to the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. Upon graduation in June 2014, he reported to Special Operations Command in Ft. Bragg, NC where he served in the J5 as an Operational Planner until June 2017. He deployed as Liaison Officer to Combined Joint Task Force OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE.
In June 2017 Colonel Boyce assumed command of Headquarters Battalion, 3d MARDIV in Okinawa, Japan. In 2019, he assumed command of The Marine Rotational Force – Darwin and deployed to Australia. He completed his tour with 3d MARDIV as the Chief of Staff. In July 2020, he reported to the Citadel as Professor of Naval Science for the NROTC program.
Colonel Boyce’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat distinguishing device, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
