An audible slurp or a rogue droplet could jeopardize Mission: Formal Dining. Each dinner guest paused to strategize. It wasn\u2019t until one guest said, \u201cThis is the moment we\u2019ve been preparing for\u201d that relaxed laugher gave rise to soup spoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leadership and etiquette instructor Chris-Ann\nStreeter, seated at the head of the\ntable, watched her students dining with confidence. \u201cEtiquette is about feeling\ncomfortable with yourself,\u201d said Streeter.\n\u201cWe want to be sure that we are being true to ourselves in character and then present that outwardly.\nEtiquette has always been important, but it is especially important for this generation that looks at their cell phone\nscreens instead of communicating face to face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Citadel published its first customs and courtesies guide in 1932, with four editions to follow, the\nlast being <em>The\nArt of\nGood Taste<\/em>. Its message\u2014that the fundamental motivation\nfor decorous behavior is \u201cconsideration for the rights and feelings\nof others\u201d\u2014will always be in style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although etiquette class is no longer required, the skills it teaches are still in demand. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Tom Clark, \u201985, executive director of the Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics, recruited Streeter to lead The Citadel Etiquette Club. \u201cKnowing the rules of etiquette,\u201d said Clark, \u201cwill help cadets respond appropriately in social situations and gain self-respect, self-confidence and peer credibility. The value of etiquette and good manners to a leader cannot be overstated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe value of etiquette and good<br>manners to a leader cannot be overstated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Streeter has lived in and visited over 28 countries. \u201cLearn the culture no matter where you are,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can help people better that way.\u201d As the wife of a Marine officer, she knows the value of interpersonal relationships and adaptability, lessons she imparts while coaching military spouses and personnel abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course Streeter tailored to Citadel cadets focused on conduct for high-stakes meetings, job interviews and dates. \u201cWhen you\u2019re in a class setting,\u201d said Streeter, \u201ceveryone can help each other.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the first day of class, Streeter armed her students with a copy of her manual, <em>Lasting Impressions<\/em>, and an arsenal of thank-you cards. \u201cThere were certain things the cadets didn\u2019t initially know about dining etiquette and thank-you cards,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes a thank- you text is not appropriate and not enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Streeter channeled her expertise on social graces\nto provide hands-on learning\nexperiences ranging from setting tables to social dancing.\n\u201cThe questions the cadets asked showed that they wanted to get into the nitty gritty of how they will behave in public during business or social settings,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re highly engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program featured an assortment of guest speakers. Attire presentations from Joseph A. Banks and the Loft helped participants gauge what to wear for civilian situations, and a resume coach taught them howto shine on paper. \u201cWe have interviews because the resume can look fabulous, but employers want to meet the actual person,\u201d said Streeter. \u201cWe\u2019re not defined by what we do. We are defined by our character, who we are. Your personal life and work will be better done when your character is deep inside you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/magazine-2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/mag2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-545\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the conclusion of the eight-week program, participants received a resume-ready certificate and were invited to a four-course dinner at the home of Citadel President Gen. Glenn Walters and his wife, Gail, for a real-world opportunity to implement their newly forged skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gail Walters demonstrated the art of entertaining with a warm welcome and a tour of Quarters One, allowing guests to practice polite conversation and admire artwork while instrumental music played in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Political science major Cadet Keaton Spitser, one of\nthe 12 students participating, enjoyed the saut\u00e9ed vegetables and chicken. The Kentucky native registered for the course\nahead of an upcoming\ninternship, which would\nmark his first\ntime visiting the nation\u2019s\ncapital. \u201cThe Citadel\u2019s etiquette class helps prepare you for professional settings by teaching\nmanners and civility,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve already started\nrecommending it to other cadets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When another cadet, who briefly left the table before the dessert course, forgot where to place his napkin properly, the classmate to his left covered for himby discretely sliding the napkin onto his chair. \u201cYou never want to embarrass people,\u201d said Streeter. \u201cWhen you have good morals and character, you can be a better listener, more respectful and sincere, and true to yourself and others.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With all napkins put in place, lively conversation lingered as the guests departed.
