{"id":352,"date":"2024-04-05T17:24:13","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T17:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/infirmary\/?page_id=352"},"modified":"2024-04-08T17:34:40","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T17:34:40","slug":"counseling-referrals-and-resources","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/infirmary\/counseling-referrals-and-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Counseling Referrals and Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-referring-for-services\">Referring for Services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Referral for Students: <\/strong>If a student\u2019s needs extend beyond the expertise of the provider, the student will be referred to off-campus counseling resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;Expenses incurred off campus are the student\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Referral for Employees: <\/strong>Citadel employees are not eligible for counseling services at the clinic.&nbsp;&nbsp;Employees are encouraged to contact Human Resources or the Employee Assistance Program (800-633-3353).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-refer-a-student-for-counseling-or-psychiatric-services-at-musc-health-at-the-citadel\"><strong>How to Refer a Student for Counseling or Psychiatric Services at MUSC Health at The Citadel&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A student\u2019s inability to cope effectively with stress can have a negative impact on the student\u2019s personal and academic functioning.&nbsp;&nbsp;Students, faculty, staff, family members and friends can intervene when they encounter distressed students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Suggestions for How to Refer Students for Counseling&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Encourage the student to call or come to the clinic to make an appointment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide the clinic phone number \u2013 <a href=\"tel:+18439534827\">843-953-4827<\/a>, and location \u2013 Citadel Infirmary&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call while you are with the student, then offer the phone to the student to schedule<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow-up by asking the student as to whether the student kept the appointment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The link below offers signs and symptoms of distress, suggestions for how to approach distressed students and refer them for counseling, information about confidentiality, and how to respond to a student who refuses counseling or expresses emergency concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-confidentiality\"><strong>Confidentiality<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By law, licensed mental health providers are not permitted to give any information to others unless the student has given specific written permission.
