{"id":26,"date":"2022-05-23T11:11:33","date_gmt":"2022-05-23T15:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/history\/?post_type=person&#038;p=26"},"modified":"2026-02-10T09:57:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T14:57:40","slug":"keith-knapp-ph-d","status":"publish","type":"person","link":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/history\/faculty-staff\/keith-knapp-ph-d\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Keith Knapp"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dr-keith-knapp\">Dr. Keith Knapp<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-professor\">Professor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A native of Pound Ridge, New York, Dr. Keith Knapp received his B.A. in History and Asian Studies from the State University of New York at Albany and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in East Asian History from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the cultural and social history of early medieval China (AD 100-600). He is particularly interested in the period\u2019s religious and social values, conceptions of the animal world, and their utopic dreams for a better tomorrow. He has authored <em>Selfless Offspring: Filial Children and Social Order in Medieval China<\/em> (2005), as well as numerous book chapters and articles. He is one of the co-editors of <em>Early Medieval Chinese Texts: A Bibliographic Guide<\/em> (2015), and the long-awaited <em>Cambridge History of China, Volume Two: The Six Dynasties 220-589<\/em> (2019). Presently, he is the editor of Bloomsbury Academic\u2019s forthcoming <em>Cultural History of Confucianism in Medieval China<\/em> and is working on a book manuscript titled: \u201cThe Lives of Filial Children: A Study of Two Medieval Chinese Manuscripts Preserved in Kyoto, Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knapp is the Chair of the Southeast Early China Roundtable and the former President of the Early Medieval China Group. He is an executive board member of the T\u2019ang Studies Society and the Elling Eide Center (Research Library and Preserve) in Sarasota, Florida. He has created and maintains the China Roundtable listserv, which includes over 420 scholars from across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knapp is the History Department\u2019s specialist in East Asia. He regularly teaches courses on pre-modern China, modern China, Japan, East Asian concepts of leadership, Chinese utopian thought, violence and warfare in Chinese history, and concepts of wellness in China.
