Mabrouk founded <em>The Gold Star Journal<\/em>. The <em>journal<\/em> provides Citadel students the opportunity to publish well written research papers, which were required for a class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gold-star-journal-funds\"> Gold Star Journal Funds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spring 2024, <strong>LTC Steve (Class of 1963) and Mrs. Noreen Hodges<\/strong> established the <strong>Gold Star Journal Endowment by Steve and Noreen Hodges, &#8217;63<\/strong>. This fund provides financial resources to support, enhance, and sustain The Citadel&#8217;s Gold Star Journal program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fall 2019, <strong>Dr. and Mrs. James F. Boyd, Class of 1971<\/strong>, established <strong>The<em> <\/em>Gold Star Journal Excellence Award<\/strong>. This award provides funds towards the six GSJ Student Awards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-printing-history\">Printing History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From 1997-2008, <em>The Gold Star Journal<\/em> was published on campus by the staff of The Citadel Print Shop.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To celebrate the 10<sup>th<\/sup> edition (2006), <em>The GSJ<\/em> was printed completely in color.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From 2008-2018, <em>The Gold Star Journal<\/em> was printed by Sun Solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2013-2018, <em>The Gold Star Journal<\/em> had been printed on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/us.fsc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)<\/a><\/strong> certified paper. It included one star for each year that the journal existed prior to its design. This seal includes the Latin words <em>Honoris Causa<\/em>, which means &#8220;for the sake of the honor.&#8221; Since 2008, the seal has been included in each edition. 2012, the GSJ seal replaced The Citadel seal on the cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The 2015 editors Jane Ma, L. Miguel Parrado, Jennifer Burch, Ryan Leach, and Lauren Seedor; Mr. John Whitten (<em>previously <\/em>Multimedia); and Dr. Suzanne Mabrouk changed the GSJ seal by removing the feather pen and flipping the crescent. The new seal appeared on the 2015 cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The 2022 editors Elissa Reckdenwald, Ken Galsgaard, John Morris, Jesse Quimby, Trey Stevens, Dylan Young, Hampton Dennis; Mr. John Whitten (<em>previously <\/em>Multimedia); and Dr. Suzanne Mabrouk redesigned the GSJ seal.&nbsp; The stars and year in which the seal was originally designed swapped positions.&nbsp; The palmetto tree became more defined.&nbsp; The name of the journal and the school were printed in gold.&nbsp; The new seal took center stage as the only thing printed on the 2022 cover.&nbsp; The year and stars on either side were gold-foil embossed for the first time on the book bind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Summer of 2025, Editor-in-Chief Noah Miller, Mr. Alex Fox (OCM), and Dr. Suzanne Mabrouk revised the GSJ seal so that the crescent, palmetto tree, book, and the Latin words <em>Honoris Causa<\/em> appear in gold. The ribbon and star were awarded retroactively to students who worked on <em>the 2023 edition<\/em>.  They have been given annually ever since.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the first year, editors are awarded a gold ribbon and star to be worn on the dress uniform. The event was entitled &#8220;Scholarship at Its Best: An Evening with the Authors and Editors of The Gold Star Journal.&#8221; &nbsp;The authors spoke about their featured papers. &nbsp;Editor-in-Chief Miguel Parrado spoke about his multi-year experience with the publication. &nbsp;Emeritus Editor-in-Chief Lance Braye, class of 2013, spoke about the influence of the publication on his medical career.  The lecture became an annual event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Due to COVID, the 2020 lecture did not occur.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Gold Star Journal Lecture was renamed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/goldstar\/all-gold-star-journal-lectures\/\">Gold Star Journal Academic Conference<\/a> (GSJAC) for 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-birth-of-the-gsj-internship-class-ldrs-399\">The Birth of The GSJ Internship Class (LDRS 399)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Spring of 2023, The GSJ Internship Class (originally ELES 301 and renamed LDRS 399 in spring 2025) was first offered to the editors. Four editors took the course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starting in the Spring of 2024, students interested in helping the GSJ organization were allowed to take this course along with editors. That Spring, one editor and five additional cadets took the course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Spring of 2025, the students in the course were given the responsibility of being a project manager\/event planner for different parts of the GSJAC. John Reynolds, class of 2018, was the first recipient with his paper and presentation entitled \u201cThe Annexation of Crimea: Intelligence Shortcomings and Successes.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2019, the first photo story was published and honored with the&nbsp;GSJ Distinction in Photography Award.&nbsp;William Rasberry, class of 2019, was the first recipient with his photo story entitled \u201cA Study in Wildlife Photography.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also in 2019, the Best Graduate Paper Submission Award was first given. Boyd, Class of 1971<\/strong>. Fall 2019, they had established <strong>The Gold Star Journal Excellence Award<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2023, the Most Creative Artwork Award was first given. Catherine Rodriguez, class of 2024, was the first recipient with her drawing entitled \u201cMilitary Shame.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Citadel Alumni Association (CAA) teamed up with <em>The Gold Star Journal<\/em> in Spring 2024 to provide The Citadel Legacy Award to a senior, whose paper was published in <em>the journal<\/em>.
