The South Carolina Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides access to certain public records to South Carolina citizens upon request (see South Carolina Code of Laws Section 30-4-15<\/a>). The Citadel does not actively share or release any personal information about an individual except to comply with an applicable law or legal process, or to protect the personal safety of the college community or the general public. However, because The Citadel is a public institution, some information may be subject to release through the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Citadel reserves the right to deny requests for information from those who are not citizens of South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The college complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)<\/strong>, a federal law designed to protect students’ privacy, and to provide them access to their education records. South Carolina’s Family Privacy Protection Act (see South Carolina Code of Laws Section 30-2-50<\/a>) prohibits a person or entity from obtaining or using any personal information obtained from The Citadel for commercial solicitation. Commercial solicitation is defined in section three of the above-referenced law as “contact by telephone, mail or electronic mail for the purposes of selling or marketing a consumer product or service.” Violators of this provision, upon conviction, must be fined or imprisoned, or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any person and\/or entity seeking access for review or copies of records, documents or materials from The Citadel under the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act, must complete and submit, with applicable fees, the University’s Freedom of Information Act Request<\/a>.
