{"id":53,"date":"2022-06-27T08:28:31","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T12:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/chemistry\/?page_id=53"},"modified":"2025-04-07T11:54:59","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T15:54:59","slug":"bs-chemistry","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/chemistry\/cadet-programs\/bs-chemistry\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemistry, B.S."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-earn-your-b-s-in-chemistry\">Earn your B.S. in Chemistry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The B.S. degree is intended for those students who wish to continue on to graduate school in chemistry, enter into the industrial sector with their bachelor&#8217;s degree or pursue an MD\/Ph.D. or other health-related fields after graduation. <strong>Students may also elect to complete the American Chemical Society Approved Program, which documents their status as professional chemists and may provide other benefits (see description below).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-student-learning-objectives\">Student Learning Objectives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students majoring in chemistry with the B.S. degree will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Demonstrate knowledge in the general theories of Chemistry in all five major areas: analytical, inorganic, organic, physical and biochemistry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply quantitative skills in solving complex problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write effectively on chemical topics using correct grammar and a style appropriate for the discipline of chemistry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speak effectively on chemical topics in a format appropriate for the discipline of chemistry<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-american-chemical-society-approved-program\">American Chemical Society Approved Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who wish to pursue research-related careers (chemical, medical, industrial) should consider taking the courses to complete the American Chemical Society-approved program. Students completing these additional requirements are awarded a certificate by the American Chemical Society documenting their status as professional chemists. They are frequently given preferential treatment as candidates for professional positions. To qualify for this distinction, students must complete all the requirements for the B.S. in Chemistry (see the Map and requirements below)&nbsp;and&nbsp;these additional courses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/mathsci\/undergrad-math\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MATH 234 &#8211; Applied Engineering Mathematics I<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/chemistry\/course-descriptions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CHEM 460 &#8211; Biochemistry Laboratory<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS) is active at The Citadel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" id=\"catbuttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-100\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/catalog.citadel.edu\/\">View Curriculum<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-100\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/academicaffairs\/academic-maps\/\">View Academic MAP<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary mission of the Department of Chemistry is to offer training, courses and degrees in Chemical Sciences to Citadel students, including those fulfilling core curriculum requirements and undergraduate Chemistry majors.
