{"id":47,"date":"2022-06-27T08:25:01","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T12:25:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/chemistry\/?page_id=47"},"modified":"2025-04-07T11:54:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T15:54:55","slug":"bachelor-of-science-in-chemistry-biochemistry-concentration","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/chemistry\/cadet-programs\/bachelor-of-science-in-chemistry-biochemistry-concentration\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemistry &#8211; Biochemistry Concentration, B.S."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chemistry-biochemistry-concentration-degree\">Chemistry &#8211; Biochemistry Concentration Degree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who have a particular interest in biochemistry or those who intend to enter medical, dental, veterinary or similar professional schools are encouraged to major in the B.S. in Chemistry &#8211; Biochemistry Specialization program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A biochemist studies the chemistry of living things and how chemicals affect biological processes such as disease, cell development, growth and heredity. Biochemists who do applied research are responsible for the development of new medicines and vaccines. Biochemists who do basic research expand our knowledge of the chemistry of living things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-degree-requirements\">Degree Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> Requirements for this degree are the same as the requirements for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/chemistry\/cadet-programs\/bs-chemistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">B.S. in Chemistry program<\/a> with the following differences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CHEM 315&nbsp;is not required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CHEM 410&nbsp;and&nbsp;CHEM 460&nbsp;are required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two approved electives are not required; however, one approved biology elective must be chosen from the following:&nbsp;BIOL 290,&nbsp;BIOL 308,&nbsp;BIOL 421,&nbsp;BIOL 424, or&nbsp;BIOL 427.
