Real-world learning asks students to think at a high level and apply that thinking to situations they will face beyond the classroom. The Rigor/Relevance Framework is a planning tool that helps you see where your assignments fall and how to stretch them toward real-world learning.

The Rigor/Relevance Framework

The framework combines two scales.

Rigor describes how complex the thinking is. It is based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, from recalling information to evaluating and creating. See Writing Learning Outcomes with Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Relevance describes how students use what they know. It has five levels:

Knowledge in one discipline

Apply within the discipline

Apply across disciplines

Apply to real-world predictable situations

Apply to real-world unpredictable situations

The Four Quadrants

Together, the two scales form four quadrants. The examples below come from a leadership course.

Quadrant

What students do

Example

A: Acquisition

Recall and understand knowledge for its own sake

Define three leadership theories.

B: Application

Apply knowledge to solve problems with a clear path

Use a leadership theory to analyze a case study.

C: Assimilation

Analyze and evaluate knowledge in depth, within the discipline

Compare two theories and judge which better explains a historical leader’s decisions.

D: Adaptation

Combine and use knowledge to solve complex, unpredictable real-world problems

Design a plan to lead a team through an unexpected crisis, then defend your choices.

All four quadrants have a place. Students need the foundation in Quadrant A before they can succeed in Quadrant D. Most courses should include work in every quadrant and build toward C and D.

Make Assessments Authentic

Authentic assessment asks students to do the kind of work people do in the field, not just recall answers. Grant Wiggins described authentic assessments as tasks that:

Ask students to perform, not just recognize or recall

Reflect the complex, sometimes messy problems of real life and work

Require students to explain and justify their thinking

Use clear criteria that students know in advance

Examples include:

A business plan or market analysis for a local organization

A policy brief written for a real decision maker

A lab design to test a real-world question

A lesson plan taught to classmates

A case response where the facts change partway through

Authentic tasks are also some of the hardest to hand off to generative AI. They depend on specific context, changing conditions, and students’ own judgment, so the work shows what students can actually do.

Plan for Real-World Learning

Map your current assignments. Place each major assignment in a quadrant.

Look for gaps. If most of your work is in Quadrants A and B, look for chances to add analysis, evaluation, or real-world application.

Add unpredictability. Turn a Quadrant B problem into a Quadrant D problem by changing a condition, adding incomplete information, or asking students to make a decision with tradeoffs.

Build in steps. Scaffold larger tasks so students practice the knowledge and skills they need before the final project.

Align with your outcomes. Make sure each assessment measures a course learning outcome. See Course Design and Alignment.

Want help designing real-world assignments?
