Effective, student-centered teaching depends on improving and assessing your daily practice, and also on making time to read and reflect on best practices and current research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-it-works\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How It Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CEITL selects a book each fall, and some years in the spring, for faculty and staff to read and discuss together. The group meets once a month to discuss the reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-get-started\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get Started<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you would like to lead a reading series for your school, department, or learning community under CEITL sponsorship, email <a href=\"mailto:CEITL@citadel.edu\">CEITL@citadel.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-most-recent-selection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most Recent Selection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fall 2026: Innovate Inside the Box: Empowering Learners Through UDL and the Innovator\u2019s Mindset<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovate Inside the Box, by George Couros and Katie Novak, looks at how educators can create meaningful learning even when budgets, required curriculum, and mandated assessments limit their options. The authors combine the Innovator\u2019s Mindset with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to show how teachers and administrators can design learning experiences that give students voice and choice and reduce barriers to learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-previous-selections\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Previous Selections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select a book to read its description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Fall 2025: The Power of Making Thinking Visible<\/strong>:<strong> Practices to Engage and Empower All Learners<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ron Ritchhart and Mark Church build on Harvard\u2019s Project Zero research to show how thinking routines, questioning, listening, and documentation help students think more deeply. Their approach also helps instructors see and respond to student thinking in any discipline.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Fall 2024 and Spring 2025: Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jos\u00e9 Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson explore how generative AI is changing teaching and learning in higher education. They offer practical guidance for writing AI policies, redesigning assignments and assessments, and helping students use AI in ways that support their learning, whether instructors choose to limit AI or bring it into their courses.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Spring 2024: Reach Everyone, Teach Everyone: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas Tobin and Kirsten Behling show how college instructors can apply UDL to strengthen engagement and learning. The book offers case studies, practical techniques, and ways to adopt UDL in small steps, starting with the parts of a course where students most often get stuck.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Fall 2023: Distracted<\/strong>: <strong>Why Students Can\u2019t Focus and What You Can Do About It<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James Lang argues that instead of trying to remove every distraction, instructors can design courses that capture and hold students\u2019 attention. He offers practical strategies for building attention through community, curiosity, and active learning.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Spring 2023: Mindset:\u00a0The New Psychology of Success<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carol Dweck explains how people\u2019s beliefs about their abilities shape the way they learn. People with a fixed mindset see ability as set, while people with a growth mindset see it as something they can develop through effort, strategy, and feedback. The book explores how instructors\u2019 feedback and expectations can encourage a growth mindset in their students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Fall 2022: Teach Students How to Learn<\/strong>: <strong>Strategies You Can Incorporate into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saundra Yancy McGuire shows instructors how to teach students to learn more effectively. She explains metacognition and the study cycle, and offers simple strategies that help students take responsibility for their own learning.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Fall 2021: Super Courses: The Future of Teaching and Learning<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ken Bain profiles college courses that engage students with intriguing questions and real problems. He shows how these courses build deep learning, critical thinking, and creativity, and how instructors can redesign their own courses around the same principles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Spring 2021: Small Teaching Online: Applying Learning Science in Online Classes<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flower Darby and James Lang offer small, research-based changes instructors can make in their online courses. The book helps instructors understand how today\u2019s students spend their time, how connectivity affects their attention and development, and what that means for teaching and supporting them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Spring 2019: The Art of Changing the Brain: Enriching the Practice of Teaching by Exploring the Biology of Learning<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James Zull explains in clear, accessible language how learning physically changes the brain. He connects brain function to the realities of the classroom and offers practical guidance for designing experiences that lead to lasting learning.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Fall 2018: Teaching College: The Ultimate Guide to Lecturing, Presenting, and Engaging Students<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norman Eng offers a practical guide to effective college instruction, especially for early-career instructors. It covers strategies for engaging students, encouraging participation, and improving learning, from syllabus design and active learning to presentations and motivating students to complete readings.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Spring 2018: Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter Brown, Henry Roediger III, and Mark McDaniel show that effortful learning is often the most effective. Drawing on cognitive psychology, they explain why strategies like retrieval practice and spaced practice produce more durable learning than highlighting and rereading, and how instructors can build these strategies into their courses.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item\"><details><summary class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__title\"><strong>Fall 2017: What the Best College Teachers Do<\/strong><\/summary><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ken Bain draws on a fifteen-year study of nearly one hundred exceptional college teachers.
