The computer science program is a joint program with the College of Charleston, and classes are held <strong>in person<\/strong> at both campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students in this program can choose from the following specializations: <strong>Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or Computer Science.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Impact of a Computer Science Graduate Degree on your Career\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZdU9vp-IsRE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-program-specializations\">Program Specializations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Computer Science:<\/strong> Providing a traditional master&#8217;s degree program that offers a balance between theory and application, the Computer Science specialization prepares students to pursue further coursework that leads to a Ph.D. and preparation for work in software development roles that include elements of architecture and design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cybersecurity: <\/strong>Founded on the academic requirements set forth by the National Security Agency, the Cybersecurity specialization provides students with the technical skills and knowledge needed to successfully protect organizational data, investigate data breaches, and develop strategies to prevent data from being compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Information Systems: <\/strong>With an emphasis on analyzing business problems that lend themselves to software solutions, the Information Systems specialization prepares students for positions that involve analysis, design, and management of information processing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Software Engineering<\/strong>: Using methodologies for designing and testing medium and large-scale software systems, the Software Engineering specialization prepares students for software engineering positions that require proficiency in specific areas of the software-development lifecycle: requirements gathering\/definition, software quality assurance, and software testing and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-admission-requirements\"><a><\/a>Admission Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-application-process\">Application Process<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for The Citadel\u2019s Master of Science in Computer and Information Sciences program, applicants must complete the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/graduatecollege\/-apply\">online graduate application<\/a> along with the non-refundable application fee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send all admission materials to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/graduatecollege\/\">The Citadel Graduate College<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eligibility-criteria\">Eligibility Criteria<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants must <strong>meet one<\/strong> of the following criteria to be admitted into the program. Additionally, all students must satisfy the prerequisite knowledge areas listed below before enrolling in any graduate CSCI\/CSIS course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete a Bachelor&#8217;s degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a Bachelor&#8217;s degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher. Complete six credit hours of graduate CSCI\/CSIS coursework as a non-degree-seeking student with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For students in a combined\/accelerated bachelor&#8217;s\/master&#8217;s (4+1) program, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher for all CSIS\/CSCI graduate courses to continue as a full-time graduate student.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a graduate certificate from the joint College of Charleston\/Citadel programs in Computer and Information Sciences, with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-statement-of-purpose\">Statement of Purpose<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Submit a statement of purpose with admission materials (700-1000 words).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-prerequisite-knowledge-area-requirements\">Prerequisite Knowledge Area Requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Prospective students of The Citadel&#8217;s Computer and Information Sciences Master&#8217;s Degree must demonstrate competency in basic computer architecture, object-oriented programming, discrete mathematics, and data structures before enrolling in any graduate CSCI\/CSIS course. These prerequisite areas may be covered by undergraduate coursework from any regionally accredited college or university. Coverage of areas by courses is at the discretion of the graduate program director. Grades of B or higher are required for courses taken outside of a baccalaureate program. Some courses may have additional prerequisites depending on where they are offered.<br><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/ccs\/graduate-programs\/prerequisite-knowledge-areas\/\">Click here to read more details on the four prerequisite knowledge areas.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relevant work experience may be acceptable in demonstrating competency if mapped to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/ccs\/graduate-programs\/prerequisite-knowledge-areas\/\">typical learning outcomes<\/a> for courses normally accepted. With prior approval from the graduate program directors, certain certified, online, university-style, MOOC courses (e.g., Coursera, edX, etc.) may be acceptable for demonstrating competency in some prerequisite areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-toefl-requirement\">TOEFL Requirement<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Prospective students whose native language is not English will be required to additionally submit TOEFL scores. The minimum acceptable scores are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>213 (computer-based)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>550 (paper-based)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>79-80 (internet-based)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-registration-requirement\">Registration Requirement<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>All admitted students must have approval from the Program Director or Department Head before registering for any courses in the Computer Science curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-pt-barracks-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>After attending The Citadel as a cadet, I wanted to continue my education and obtain a master&#8217;s degree in a computer science discipline. I wanted a program that offered the flexibility for working professionals but was also recognized as a quality program. After searching through many different online programs, it became obvious that The Citadel&#8217;s program was far superior to other comparable programs. The location of the classes, small class size, and thorough curriculum make The Citadel Graduate College an ideal program for working professionals who need flexibility without sacrificing quality.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>After entering the program, I could see ways in which I could immediately apply what I was learning in the classroom to my job. The program isn&#8217;t just abstract theories, it&#8217;s real-world application for the real-world professionals who want to further themselves in their careers. This allowed me to progress in my career immediately based on my performance and not due to letters behind my name.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The leadership and curriculum taught at The Citadel through its Corps of Cadets are of the same quality in The Citadel Graduate College.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Ravan<\/strong><br>Corps of Cadets, Class of 2011<br>Citadel Graduate College, Class of 2014<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accelerated-ms-program-for-citadel-students\">Accelerated MS Program for Citadel Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Qualified undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science may apply to the Combined BS\/MS program in Computer Science\/Computer and Information Sciences (4+1). In this program, students may earn up to 15 credit hours toward the MS degree and apply up to 12 of those hours toward pre-approved BS Computer Science requirements. Upon conferral of the BS Computer Science degree, students convert to fully admitted MS Computer and Information Sciences students.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.citadel.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=18&amp;poid=1140\" id=\"https:\/\/catalog.citadel.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=18&amp;poid=1140\">See the catalog page for admission criteria, course substitutions, and other details.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-degree-requirements\">Degree Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Master of Science in Computer and Information Sciences degree is conferred upon those candidates who successfully complete an approved program of study consisting of a minimum of 33 semester hours of graduate credit (of which no more than nine may be transfer credit) with a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
