Students will gain the skills needed to address both scientific applications and the theoretical aspects of computer science, while also gaining exposure to computer hardware, such as microprocessors, through courses offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Electives allow students to explore applied areas of computing. Upon completing the program, graduates will be well-prepared for careers as software engineers, computer programmers, data scientists, information systems analysts, systems programmers or applications developers in business and industry. This program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abet.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/www.abet.org<\/a>, under the commission\u2019s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Computer Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-program-structure\">Program Structure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The B.S. in Computer Science requires a total of 122 base credit hours, which includes (not counting ROTC\/Leadership requirements):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>18 hours of electives<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>17 hours of core mathematics and statistics courses<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MATH 131<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MATH 132<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MATH 206<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>STAT 261<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MATH\/STAT Elective<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>46 hours of required courses in computer science:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CSCI 201<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 211<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 202<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 223<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 305<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 317<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 320<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 355<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 405<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 420<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSCI 495<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ELEC 311<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ELEC 330<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nine (9) hours of approved computer science electives selected from among the computer science courses offered at the 300 or 400 level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>General Education requirements<\/strong> for a selected strand, physical education, modern language, and laboratory science must be completed. The complete course of study is provided in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/root\/college-catalogs\">the College Catalog<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/root\/academicadvising-majors\">Degree maps<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With recent changes to the General Education requirements, please reference the 4-year plan in your catalog year for your specific semester-by-semester plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-program-educational-objectives-peos\">Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Within five years of graduation, alumni of the B.S. program in Computer Science should be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conducting successful careers in computer science disciplines and\/or pursuing graduate study in computer science.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrating life-long learning skills and adapting to emerging markets and technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embracing high personal and professional standards of conduct, citizenship, and service.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-student-outcomes-sos\">Student Outcomes (SOs)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduates of the program will have the ability to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program\u2019s discipline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program\u2019s discipline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-concentrations\"><strong>Concentrations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The B.S. in Computer Science can also be pursued with the concentrations below.
