Special thanks to Professor Lancie Alfonso for including his students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Disability and Entrepreneurship: Models of Success (DEMOS) initiative supports the development of new entrepreneurial endeavors that fully incorporate principles of Universal Design in students\u2019 business models. Successful applications are those that (a) offer a viable, competitive business model, and (b) utilize Universal Design principals to develop a workforce, work environment, product, service, or system that is fully inclusive and universally accessible; particularly for workers and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A core element is an emphasis on educating entrepreneurs about the genuine value that individuals with disabilities bring to the workplace and their value as customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D.E.M.O.S. was initially funded through the&nbsp;<strong>U.S. Department of Education\u2019s T.P.S.I.D. Project (Transition and&nbsp;Postsecondary&nbsp;Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, over 900 students have participated in this training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 1: Introduction to the 7 Principles of Universal Design (Video Training)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are asked to view the video and take a short quiz that tests their knowledge of UD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DEMOS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T-xl95cY9w4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also access additional UD resources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/ud_explained.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/ud_explained.pdf\">7 UD Principles Explained<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/ud_reference_sheet.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/ud_reference_sheet.pdf\">UD Reference Sheet<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 2: Workshop Participation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students participate in a live or online workshop consisting of challenges to business development where they are asked using gamification to develop solutions that include UD for greater inclusion of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 3: Business Idea\/Processes Competition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each student in their respective classes presents in 60 seconds or less a business idea and\/or best practice (depending on the course work involved) that includes UD and fosters inclusion. It is judged based on both the idea&nbsp;and&nbsp;the integration of UD in its design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DEMOS is offered in in-classroom settings only and is not open to the general public\/participation.
