Summer Invitational Application Info

Applications for the 2010 Summer Institute will be accepted through February 27, 2010. Applicants will be contacted when their materials are received. A pre-institute session will be on May 20, 5:00-8:00; Saturday, and a Writer's Marathon will be May 22, 9:00-3:00. Regular sessions meet June 7 - July 1, Mondays - Thursdays, 8:30-3:30. Applicants need to be able to attend all sessions.
Teachers who complete the Summer Institute become "Teacher Consultants" for other LWP programs: leading inservice workshops, helping with the Young Writers' Conference or Young Writers' Camp, teaching on-site courses or serving as guest speakers for such courses, giving presentations at area conferences, and participating in writers' groups.

To apply for the Summer Institute, you need to complete the following steps:

1. Obtain a letter of recommendation from an administrator at your school. You may wish to include a stamped, addressed envelope along with the required reference form.

2. Prepare a Microsoft Word Document (PC format only)
containing these items:

A. A cover sheet with the following information:

Principal's Name

Have you taken a graduate course at the Citadel within the last five years? yes / no

B. A description, no more than a page in length, of how you use writing in your classroom during a typical nine-week grading period.

C. A description of two "best practices" involving writing, either of which you could use as a sample demonstration during the Summer Institute. For each best practice, provide an overview of the lesson and its goals, a description of the writing activities, and copies of any assessment measures (such as scoring guides). Ideally, you should have access to samples of student work generated by each lesson.

All materials must be received by February 27, 2010.

If you are invited to attend the Summer Institute, you will need to be able to attend all sessions. Your tuition will be covered by a grant from the National Writing Project; in addition, we will provide all your books, plus a $100 stipend to cover meals, parking and incidentals. Upon successful completion of the Institute, you will receive six hours of graduate credit.
