10th Armored Division Veterans' Association Establishes
Charleston – The 10th Armored Division Veterans' Association recently established a scholarship to support cadets enrolled in The Citadel's Army ROTC program. The scholarship, held at The Citadel Trust, was funded through an outright cash gift of $25,000, provided by the organization's treasurer, Mr. W. C. Schulze of Greenwood, South Carolina. The endowed 10th Armored Division Scholarship Fund will provide annual funding to support a Citadel cadet currently enrolled in the Army ROTC program and contracted to serve in the U.S. Army upon graduation. The scholarship aims to perpetuate the memory of the members of the 10th Armored Division who made the supreme sacrifice, who were gravely wounded, and who served our country so well during World War II. “Citadel graduates have served with distinction in every American conflict since the Mexican War. This endowed fund will provide scholarship resources for generations of future cadets who wish to honor this tradition by electing to serve in the U. S. Army,” said Dennis Bergvall, Executive Director of The Citadel Foundation. “On behalf of the Army ROTC department and the entire Citadel campus, we are deeply appreciative to the 10th Armored Division Veterans' Association for this generous gift.” Known as the "Tigers," the 10th Armored Division is renowned for its brave service during World War II, perhaps most notably as the first American armored division to disembark on French soil directly from the States. Active from July 15, 1942 to October 13, 1945, the "Tigers" formed part of the United States' rapidly expanding Armored Force in the early days of the war, playing a crucial role in the defeat of Nazi Germany. The 10th Armored Division Scholarship Fund may be increased through additional contributions by any individual or group, at any time. The Citadel Foundation, as part of its $100 million Campaign for The Citadel, aims to secure a total of $7.75 million to endow 50 new Armed Forces Scholarships, which subsidize the difference between the college's full tuition and the amount a cadet pursuing a military contract receives through his or her ROTC scholarship awarded by the U.S military.
The Army ROTC, or Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Program is widely known as one of the nation's foremost leadership training courses. As part of The Citadel's curriculum, Army ROTC cadets participate in classes and field training exercises through which they learn first-hand what it takes to lead others, motivate groups, and conduct missions as an Army officer. Upon graduation, cadets with Army contracts receive their commission and earn the bar of Second Lieutenant.
