The Citadel Business Hall of Fame Presents:
Monday, April 26th 2004, the Citadel School of Business inducted three individuals into the newly created Citadel Business Hall of Fame by awarding them the Leader of Principle Award. The black tie event took place in the Courvoisie Banquet Hall in the Holliday Alumni Center. Local alumni Ed Pendarvis (Class of 1965) and William Davoli (Class of 1985), and Sunbelt Business Advisors sponsored the event. The evening also served to induct six juniors, twelve seniors, and twelve MBA students into the Beta Gamma Sigma international honor society recognizing outstanding academic achievements in accredited business and management programs. The mission of the Citadel School of Business is to educate and develop leaders of principle to serve our global community. Each year, the Business Hall of Fame will recognize individuals that epitomize the Citadel's School of Business mission. In this inaugural event, the School of Business honored T. Walter Brashier, L. William Krause, and Anderson D. Warlick, celebrating their substantial success in business and with other organizations, as well as making significant contributions to their communities. Each individual was presented with a Leader of Principle Award. They have lived their lives consistent with the School's mission and values. The Citadel's President, Major General John Grinalds began the ceremony, acknowledging the "very first members of the Business Hall of Fame." General Grinalds pronounced, "These gentlemen all represent vision. And without vision, all leaders would perish." He added, " And these men are being honored for their vision and success in their business and family lives, their support of their communities and also for the support they give to enhance lives of students at the Citadel." Remarkable in their own way, each inductee thanked Dean Earl Walker and General Grinalds for taking the Citadel School of Business to new heights. They each mentioned part of leadership was helping to serve others. Mr. Brashier offered, "No one is anything without 'others'." Closing remarks were made by Dean Earl Walker. As he noted, Walter Brashier, Bill Krause, and Andy Warlick are exceptional leaders of principle who have made a profound impact on their organizations and on their communities. They epitomize the reputation all that The Citadel stands for and provide something we can all be proud of. The Citadel School of Business will honor individuals each year. Next year's event will take place Thursday, April 14. Inductees into the Hall of Fame may be nominated by anyone. Candidates need not be living, graduates of the Citadel, or residents of South Carolina. The following are brief introductions to this year's prestigious inductees:
Speaking to a Citadel graduate Finance class, he confessed that upon his graduation from the Seminary he spent several years traveling the Southeast, doing evangelical work. His only means of support would be to 'pass the hat' at the end of each stop. He closed that evening with a list of Business Principles that were taught to him by his father and others along the way. Accordingly, Walter Brashier is a man with many talents, interests, and principles. In his professional life, he has been a minister, an entrepreneur, a builder, and a benefactor. His conscientious efforts to improve life in his community have had a positive impact on many. Mr. Brashier has been an avid supporter of technical education and the career and job skills it develops. The Brashiers' convey their strong personal commitment to the values and traditions of The Citadel by providing several scholarships to students who "best demonstrate qualities of leadership, service, and achievement which define the Corps of Cadets. " Walt and Christine Brashier have four children and eleven grandchildren. Three are Citadel graduates: son, Ted, Class of 1987, and grandsons Wesley, Class of 2002, and Walt, Class of 2003. Plus Kathy Brashier Duncan received her MBA from the Citadel in 1977.
Mr. Krause is President and Chief Executive Officer of Caspian Networks, Inc., an IP networking systems provider. In addition, Mr. Krause has been president of LWK Ventures, and perhaps is best known as President and CEO of 3Com Corporation through its high growth years. 3Com Corporation may best be known for developing the Palm Pilot. Bill continues to serve young people as a mentor and counselor. He lives his words that, in the three phases of a person's life - learning, productivity, and giving back - the last phase of giving back never ends. Krause and his wife Gay have been particularly generous to The Citadel. Currently on The Citadel Foundation Board, Krause and the Krause Foundation have funded a number of programs, including a business plan competition scholarship, a staff/faculty incentive compensation program, and, most recently, a $2 million grant to support the Krause Initiative in Ethics and Leadership. Continuing on General Grinald's opening remarks for the evening, Mr. Krause remembered AOL's Steve Case's remarks on vision saying, "Vision without execution is merely hallucination." This is not the first time Bill Krause has been recognized by The Citadel. In 2000, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of science. We are now honored to name him a Leader of Principle -- not only for his contributions to the world of information technology, his success in the corporate world, and his generosity to his alma mater -- but also for his continuing demonstration of distinguished and honorable leadership.
Andy Warlick came to The Citadel in the mid-70's "for the challenge" and has said that the experience reinforced his work ethic and resilience, serving him well in the ensuing years. General John Grinalds, President of The Citadel, says of Warlick, "He's done an exceptional job in living out what he's learned here. We teach the principles of leadership, and he applies those in his everyday life. His word is his bond, and that's essential to establishing a trusting relationship that's necessary to make business - and family - a success." Distinguished by his optimism, competitiveness, and vision, Andy Warlick personifies the purpose of The School of Business Leader of Principle. He notes his Citadel values of Duty, Honor, God, Country, and Teamwork stuck with and guided him throughout his life. Speaking on leadership, he offers, "to be successful, leaders not only lead in business, industry, and alma mater but learn to lead leaders as well." He has been a leader in the Young Presidents Association. Warlick believes that learning is a priority and established the Anderson D.Warlick Citadel Foundation Scholars to endow four incoming freshmen who demonstrate scholastic and leadership abilities. Warlick is married to his high school sweetheart, Pam, and together they have two children, Collins and Davis. He is a former chairman and current member of The Citadel Foundation Board.
