Post and Courier Foundation Awards $150,000 Library Grant

Charleston - The Post and Courier Foundation has awarded The Citadel a five-year grant totaling $150,000 for the expansion of the Daniel Library. This gift is the first major commitment toward a proposed library renovation and expansion, a two-phase $15 million project that will modernize the current facility and enlarge it to house such new programs as The Citadel Leadership Center.

"A library and leadership center at the heart of The Citadel’s campus will create a home for the intellectual excitement and ferment that is so evident at The Citadel today," said Angie LeClercq, director of the Daniel Library. "I am deeply appreciative to The Post and Courier Foundation for this tremendous gift."

The renovations to the library, which first opened in 1960, will include approximately 20,000 square feet of new space and 37,000 square feet of renovated space for existing and new program needs, including up to 20 group and collaborative study rooms. The Information Commons and integral Cyber Cafe will provide a casual place for student interaction. A 650-seat multipurpose auditorium will be available for conferences, leadership programs and Friends of Daniel Library community outreach events.

Within a revitalized Daniel Library, the Leadership Center will challenge cadets to study leadership theory and its practice in everyday life through an interdisciplinary, strategic, and action-oriented approach. Cadets of all majors will emerge as better problem-solvers, strategists, innovators, and team-builders. The center builds upon the foundation of the Krause Initiative in Leadership, launched in 2003 with a $2 million gift from The Krause Foundation of Los Altos, California. The endowed Krause Initiative engages Citadel cadets in leadership training and character development programs campus-wide.

To establish the Leadership Center and reinvigorate existing resources, The Citadel aims to secure approximately $15 million for faculty support, facility improvements and program enhancements at the Daniel Library. The Citadel Foundation expects to raise $9.5 million toward this goal by the end of 2007. It is as a major part of the Campaign for The Citadel, a comprehensive $100 million fundraising initiative to advance the college’s ability to achieve excellence in the education of principled leaders.
