The 17th Citadel Symposium
on Southern Politics
March 4-5, 2010

The Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice at The Citadel and the Co-Directors of the Symposium are pleased to announce that the Seventeenth Citadel Symposium on Southern Politics has been scheduled for Thursday and Friday, March 4th and 5th, 2010 on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, SC. Interest and participation in the Symposium has grown nicely over the years, and we look forward to putting together between 15-20 panels at the 2010 conference.

Faculty and students who are engaged in research and writing on any aspect of the politics of the South are invited to read the Call for Papers (below) and submit their paper proposals. Please watch this website throughout Fall Semester 2009, as we will be posting updated details of the conference's organization and events throughout that time. We look forward to seeing you in Charleston in March.

Proposals and other conference-related correspondence need to arrive on or before the deadline of Friday, November 13th.  After this date, proposals for papers and panels will be considered on a space-available basis. Notification of inclusion on the program will be made as it is developed, but no later than early December.

Papers and Panels: Those interested in presenting a research paper should submit a title and abstract (hypotheses or explanation of research, methodology and significance).  There are no restrictions on topic or hypotheses other than that it/they relate to contemporary southern politics and that it/they be of interest and/or significance to a scholarly professional audience.

Anyone interested in developing a special panel for the Symposium's program is invited to make a proposal to the Director.  In the case of panels organized by outside parties, we prefer that they consist of 3-4 papers each and that the organizer(s) of the panel provide, in addition to presenters, two discussants of their own if possible.

Discussant Opportunities: The codirectors of the Symposium would like to extend an invitation to all faculty, graduate students and other individuals who are or would like to attend this event to consider participating as a discussant on one or more panels in areas of their professional expertise. If you would like to participate in this manner, please submit your name, affiliation, contact information (address, phone, email) and area(s) of interest to Scott Buchanan before the November, 13th 2009 deadline.
