Humanities & Social Science Grants
Listed below are links to several granting organizations that provide financial assistance to professionals in the field of humanities and social sciences. The Dean's Office has print outs of much of this material as well, so please feel free to stop by to review the material. We're happy to provide any assistance to you in the application process.
This list will be updated as frequently as possible and is by no means exhaustive. If you are aware of additional grand funding sources that are not listed here, please let us know so that we may add them to the list.
Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Awards leadership in the administration of criminal justice as an academic and/or professional discipline in a manner which reflects the highest standards of integrity and performance
American Antiquarian Society Fellowships The American Antiquarian Society offers three broad categories of visiting research fellowships, with tenures ranging from one to twelve months. All of the fellowships are designed to enable scholars, advanced graduate students, and others to spend an uninterrupted block of time doing research in the AAS library on their projects and discussing their work with others.
American Association of University Women The AAUW Educational Foundation advance educational and professional opportunities for women in the United States and around the globe. One of the world's largest sources of funding for graduate women, the Educational Foundation is providing funding for more than 250 fellowships, grants, and special awards to outstanding women
American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) ACLS offers fellowships and grants in more than a dozen programs for research in the humanities and related social sciences at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels
ACLS Collaborative Research Awards These awards support collaborative research in the humanities and related social sciences
ACLS Fellowships Research in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences, the ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant
American Jewish Archives Fellowship Supports scholars to conduct in-depth research at the American Jewish Archives and to take part in the academic community of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion
American Philosophical Society Funds small grants to scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to publication in all areas of knowledge
American Probation and Parole Association Supports research and training projects on a variety of subject areas related to juvenile and criminal justice issues, typical research/grant projects include program development and implementation guides, training curricula and monographs, and the delivery of training seminars, audio and satellite teleconferences, and technical assistance
American Political Science Association APSA sponsors several programs to support individual research and training endeavors for study and research in political science and related disciplines
American Psychological Association Government Relations Fellowships Offers members the opportunity to spend one year as a special assistant with a member of Congress or congressional committee on Capitol Hill
American Research in the Humanities in China (ACLS) This program is open to scholars in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences who have received a Ph.D. or its equivalent by the time of application and wish to conduct the research in China. Those submitting a joint proposal must apply individually. Support is offered to specialists in all fields of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences, and is not limited to China scholars. Fellowship tenure is from four months to one year of continuous research in China
American Society of Criminology Awards and fellowships for educators in the field of criminology
Association for Asian Studies Provides a listing of grants and fellowships available for Asian studies
Bank of America American Heritage Preservation Grants Grants will help to preserve specific items, including works of art, artifacts and historical documents that are in need of conservation
Braitmayer Foundation Interests include preparation of and professional development opportunities for teachers, particularly those which encourage people of high ability and diverse background to enter and remain in K-12 teaching
Bureau of Justice Statistics Promotes criminal justice statistical research among the academic and professional justice community
Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellows (ACLS) These fellowships support advanced assistant professors and untenured associate professors in the humanities and related social sciences whose scholarly contributions have advanced their fields and who have well-designed and carefully developed plans for new research. The fellowships are intended to provide time and resources to enable these faculty members to conduct their research under optimal conditions. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant.
Center for the Study of the American South The Center supports undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research on innovative topics related to the U.S. South with travel grants, summer research stipends, postdoctoral fellowships, and course development awards.
Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) - German Academic Exchange Service For undergraduate and graduate students to encourage research and promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic and social aspects of modern and contemporary German affairs from an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective
The Ford Foundation Supports efforts to reduce poverty and injustice and promote democratic values, international cooperation and human achievement
Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library Grants to aid research in the humanities in any field appropriate to the collections at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library
Fund for Central and Eastern European Book Project Grants program assists in translation and dissemination of high quality literary and scholarly books in the languages of Central and Eastern Europe

Henry Luce Foundation Areas include American art, Asia, and public policy and the environment
Horatio Alger Fellowship for the Study of American Popular Culture Funding is available to scholars who will be using materials from the Northern Illinois University's major holdings in American popular culture.
Howard Foundation Grant awards in the humanities, topic changes yearly. 2009-2010 topic is History and Philosophy, applications due November 10, 2008. 2010-2011 topic is Creative Writing in English: Fiction and Poetry.

International Research and Exchange Board (IREX) Supports programs to improve the quality of education, strengthen independent media and foster pluralistic civil society development
John S. Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships Individual fellowships in all fields, including social sciences, humanities and creative arts
John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Areas include community and economic development; digital media, learning and education; mental health; policy research and regional policy
Save our History (The History Channel) Community preservation projects that engage students in learning about, documenting and preserving the history of their communities
Society for French Studies Grants in support of conferences held in the UK and Ireland and concerned with research in any area of French studies
Smith Richardson Foundation Supports projects that will help the public and policy makers understand and address critical challenges facing the United States
Spencer Foundation Research projects that study education, including teacher education programs
UNC Visiting Scholars Program Funding to support graduate students, faculty and independent scholars who plan to use resources available in the Southern Historical Collection
USC Institute for Southern Studies Travel grants for scholars who will visit the institute at USC in Columbia, SC for at least one week to conduct research
Woods Charitable Fund Areas of interest include human services, education, civic and community and arts and culture
