STA-21 completes 35-mile bike race in North Carolina in 2nd place

Navy Officer Candidate and Citadel Junior Zaki Rucker placed second in the Burke Hospice Metric Century bike race held for the first time this spring in Morganton, N.C. He finished the 35-mile race two minutes behind the first-place finisher and 20 minutes before the third-place finisher.

A native of Seattle, Wash., Rucker enlisted in the U.S. Navy through the delayed entry program in March 2004. After boot camp in Great Lakes, IL he attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif. , where he earned an associate degree in Modern Standard Arabic. Upon graduation he received orders to Navy Information Operations Command Georgia where he worked until accepted in the Seaman to Admiral 21 Commissioning Program (STA-21) at The Citadel. His awards include the Joint Service Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal and Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal as well as various unit awards.

Rucker is a junior majoring in history. Upon graduation May 7 he will accept a commission as a U.S. Naval Officer in the Information Dominance Corps.
