Lowcountry Writing Project offering spring classes for teachers
The Lowcountry Writing Project, Charleston and The Citadel's local affiliate of the National Writing Project, is accepting applications for two spring courses.
The first course targets content-area teachers who, in compliance with the new Common Core State Standards, need to include more writing in their classes. "Assigning and Assessing Student Writing" is a one-graduate-hour course designed to help teachers create and grade effective writing assignments. Classes meet five Wednesdays from 4:45 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 through Feb. 27 at The Citadel. The cost is id="mce_marker"90.
The second course targets Social Studies teachers, English teachers, and librarians. The Common Core State Standards require the use of literary texts in content-area classes, so this three-graduate-hour course, "Young Adult Literature," will introduce participants to the variety of student-friendly texts that can complement traditional sources, with a special focus on historical fiction. Classes meet from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursdays Jan. 10 through April 18 at The Citadel. The cost is $300.
