Joy B Jamison
Corps Grad ’13
I graduated with a history degree in May 2013. I have since married my high school sweetheart, and we are now expecting our first child this May. Because my husband is a Marine, we have recently relocated to Jacksonville, North Carolina, where I am currently a Citadel recruiter and very active in volunteering for various military organizations. However, I intend to pursue a career in either law enforcement or teaching when we settle in a place long enough for me to do so.
How do you think your experience at The Citadel got you to where you are now?
The experience I gained from The Citadel has absolutely transformed me. Throughout my years, I grew up. During knob year, I learned very quickly the value of discipline, accountability, responsibility, and leadership. My remaining years, I sharpened and fine-tuned those lessons to translate into strength, resilience, and integrity. Those are lessons not a lot of people learn so early and so quickly in life. At The Citadel, I was fully immersed in a mentality and atmosphere that constantly challenged me. I learned to lean on my classmates when I needed to but to ultimately depend on myself. There are many and constant challenges in life. I firmly believe that because of my experiences at The Citadel, I rise to meet those challenges instead of letting them wear me down.
Why should young women consider attending The Citadel?
I think young women should consider The Citadel for the challenge that it presents. I strongly urge every young woman considering The Citadel to take a good, hard look at herself in the mirror. To ask herself what she wants out of her college experience. If you want to be challenged, to learn how strong you are, and to know at the end of each day that you gave it all you have, please apply. It will be four very difficult years, but it is four years in exchange for the rest of your life. The experiences you gain from The Citadel create a solid, intrinsic foundation that cannot be broken, a sense of pride that cannot be matched, and a connection to every cadet and alumni that you just cannot find anywhere else.
