Program Origin:

Because of the unique challenges facing the many different categories of veteran students on campus (cadet veteran, day veteran, evening undergraduate veteran, graduate veteran, active duty student), including financial issues as well as post-graduation career pathway development, The Tommy Baker Veterans Fellowship program provides participants with an opportunity to address these needs while moving towards degree completion and employment in their chosen field. To do this, the costs related to degree completion must be addressed as well as positioning veterans to have the requisite skills, experiences, and presentation of an employment package to prospective employers that distinguish them from other candidates.

The Baker Fellows program includes 10 fellowships each academic year and includes a $5,000 stipend for tuition and educational expenses and an individualized internship experience overseen by The Citadel Career Services division, which offers academic credit as well as a customized educational experience. One component of the internship experience is a research project, where students complete an assessment of an organizational issue with recommended strategies and solutions. This document can then be added to the student’s e-portfolio as evidence of academic excellence.

In sum, the Tommy Baker Veteran Fellowship is a unique and rewarding experience for veteran students by meeting an immediate set of needs while positioning the Fellows for future success. With the support from Tommy Baker, Citadel veterans are given a significant advantage over students at other institutions.

Tommy Baker was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended Moultrie High School and, motivated by a desire to serve his country and the patriotism of many past generations of Charlestonians, he enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after graduation. His service took him far from Charleston to the Japanese island of Okinawa. He returned home in 1968 and enrolled at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. The strict discipline of the Marine Corps prepared him for a first-rate education facilitated by The Citadel’s supportive veterans program at the time.

In 1988, he was accepted into Harvard Business School's exclusive Owner/President Management Program, an intensive three-year study of business models and executive education. After spending 25 years as an automobile dealer across the South, he founded Baker Motor Company in 1988. Baker Motor Company has since expanded to include Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, Maserati, Porsche, Land Rover, Infiniti, smart car, and a luxury Pre-Owned Center in a state-of-the-art facility on Savannah Highway. Baker Motor Company was most recently named one of Automotive News magazine’s “2013 Best Auto Dealerships to Work For” list.

A committed corporate citizen who believes his success is due in large part to the community in which he lives, Mr. Baker works with and supports many charitable organizations, as well as the medical and arts communities. He serves as Entrepreneur in Residence at the College of Charleston and has taught a senior-level seminar for 21 years. In 1995, Mr. Baker was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Charleston. Mr. Baker’s previous philanthropic support of The Citadel includes gifts to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, athletic scholarship support, and sponsorship of The Citadel Kickoff Classic golf tournament.
