Welcome to the Citadel at Sea program! We are excited to launch our new semester program aboard Charleston's own Spirit of South Carolina, a 140-foot, traditional sailing vessel dedicated to providing a unique educational platform for the Palmetto State. Live, Sail and Learn aboard the Spirit of South Carolina this Fall! The inaugural Citadel at Sea program will take place during the Fall 2017 semester. A short-term faculty-led voyage will be offered to the South Carolina Corps of Cadets as well as veteran, MECEPs, CGC students and non-Citadel students. This program will consist of 3 on-campus class meetings and one weekend sail aboard the Spirit of South Carolina. 

COST - FALL 2017

  • $1500 - Program Fee for Undergraduate Students
  • $1860 - Program Fee for Graduate Students 
  • Program Fee includes: Tuition for 3 credits, Onboard Orientation, Accommodation and Meals aboard the Spirit of South Carolina during weekend sail

DATES - FALL 2017

  • Wednesday, October 25th - On-Campus Class Meeting
  • Friday, October 27th-Sunday October 29th - Off-Shore sail aboard Spirit of South Carolina
  • Friday, November 3rd - On-Campus Class Meeting
  • Friday, December 1st - On-Campus Class Meeting 

COURSES - FALL 2017

  • Aspects of Maritime Commerce and Culture: This interdisciplinary course provides a unique introduction to the important role of maritime commerce in the southeast United States. Building on the sailing experience of the Citadel at Sea Program aboard the Spirit of South Carolina, students will have the opportunity to examine first-hand the challenges and opportunities of maritime commerce. Each student will select a relevant topic and, over the course of the semester, write a term paper (15 pages for undergraduate credit, 25 pages for graduate credit). The paper could cover a variety of commercial, political, military-strategic or economic aspects. Topics must be approved by Professor Sparks during the second week of class. The final paper is due on December 1. 
  • Students will be enrolled in INTD 350 (undergraduates) or INTD 650 (graduates). This course will count as a general elective. However, students seeking to receive credit towards their major can submit a substitution for degree requirement form. Selected courses have been pre-approved for substitution to include the following:

                                   BADM 490 - Independent Study - 3 credits 
                                   PSCI 433 - Topics in International Politics - 3 credits
                                   PSCI 463 - Topics in Law and Legal Studies - 3 credits
                                   PSCI 498 - Independent Study - 3 credits

                             Graduate Courses:
                                  BADM 795 - Independent Study - 3 credits 
                                  PSCI 510 - Special Topics or Service Learning - 3 credits

SPRING 2018 SEMESTER PROGRAM 

The Citadel will offer a full semester sail program aboard the Spirit of South Carolina during the Spring 2018 term. Students can find more information about this program here. This program is open to cadets, graduate , MECEPs, Veteran  and non-Citadel students.
