Virus to blame for outbreak of stomach illness

A virus is to blame for the gastro-intestinal illness that landed 12 cadets in The Citadel infirmary on March 6, according to lab results received today.

All of the cadets have been discharged from the infirmary and have returned to their companies.

On March 6, Citadel physician Dr. Carey Capell reported the outbreak to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) because the number of cases was higher than usual for the Corps of Cadets. Capell said on an average day two to three cadets out of a student body of 1,949 will report to the infirmary with gastro-intestinal illnesses.
