Dr. William H. Bowers

William H Bowers MS MD, Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic and Plastic Hand  Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center

william_h_bowersDr Bowers was born in Raleigh NC and spent his childhood in the Tryon, Hendersonville, and Asheville NC area. He graduated from High school in Chesnee SC (Spartanburg Co).
Dr Bowers is a 1960 graduate of The Citadel (Charleston SC) with a BS Chemistry, a 1962 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a MS Physical Chemistry and an MD in 1966. After his surgical internship at Chapel Hill he entered the US Army Medical Corps and became the Division Flight Surgeon for the 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam (1967-68) He received the Combat Medical Badge, Bronze Star with Valor, 8 Air Medals with Valor and 2 Purple Hearts. Following his army service he completed his Orthopedic Residency at UNC Chapel Hill in 1973. He then was the selected as an Anne C Kane Fellow in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City where he trained for one year with Dr. Robert E. Carroll.

He returned to Chapel Hill in 1973 and joined the faculty at the UNC Dept of Orthopedic Surgery where he was the director of the hand surgery training program. He entered private practice in in 1982 and has practiced in Asheville NC, Greensboro NC and Richmond VA. During his career he has served on the governing body of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and was that organizations first Sterling Bunnell International Traveling Fellow. He has published over 60 scientific articles in journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and Journal of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He has written many book chapters and edited several books about hand surgery.

He joined Dr Charles Mc Dowell for eleven years of hand surgery practice in Richmond VA (1987-1998) after which he became the president and CEO of Advanced Orthopedic Centers – an 17 man orthopedic practice in Richmond (1998 - 2006).

Dr Bowers retired from private practice in 2006. He then joined the faculty of the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University and continues to teach orthopedic and plastic surgery residents as the director of hand surgery at the McGuire Veterans Admin Hospital in Richmond. He continues to publish his research interests with the collaboration of the MCV Dept of Orthopedic Surgery.
His other interests are family and golf.
He has recently authored and published a booklet on ethics and professionalism in the practice of medicine – entitled “The Journey from MD to Physician”.

He is married to Jane King Bowers of Asheville NC and has two daughters -Joy and Rebecca - and two grandchildren.
Dr Bowers and his wife have recently relocated to the Charleston area and he has joined the faculty of MUSC as an adjunct professor of Orthopedic Surgery.
