Criteria

The CASM Distinguished Alumni and Friends award

The criteria for induction into The Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics include:

• National or international recognition of accomplishments in education, research, clinical practice, government or military service, and/or administration/management. The recipient is recognized by peers for the strength of their leadership in a scientific discipline, discoveries, teaching and publications.

• Professional Achievement and Career and/or Military Service Distinction: The recipient attained prominence through his or her efforts in commerce, industry, technology, scientific professions, the arts, education, government, military or other worthy endeavors that form a record of accomplishment impressive to alumni, the public and the nation.

• Service to Society and Community: The recipient exhibits integrity and a demonstrated commitment to community service by bettering the lives of others.

• Service and Support to the Citadel The recipient’s deeds and actions reflect the importance of their educational training, pride in their alma mater, and loyalty to the School of Science and Mathematics (SSM) and The Citadel as demonstrated through their interest, actions and support of SSM students and activities.

The inductee must either have a background in or contributed to a discipline relevant to SSM. We encourage nominations of exceptional alumni who are early in their career (within 15 years of graduating from The Citadel); their nominations will be evaluated separately from the more established nominees. At most, one early career inductees will be selected each year.  All inductees must be available to attend the awards ceremony during Corps Week in March.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , Assistant to the Dean.  Nomination packages should include: (1) a letter explaining why the individual is being nominated including an overview of their contributions to their profession, The Citadel, and SSM; and (2) a 1-2 page resume or complete Curriculum Vitae.  Following an initial screening, additional materials such as a short biography may be requested for nominations selected for the final stage.

Deadline: June 1 of each year.

Selection process: All reviews and decisions will be made by the CASM Selection Committee (see below for members).

Awardees will receive an award and be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards banquet during Corps week.


 The CASM Faculty award

Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize an exceptionally successful faculty (current, past or retired) who has/had significantly impacted the students and/or The Citadel during their time at The Citadel. There are other annual college-wide faculty awards; this award is to recognize sustained achievements spanning a number of years.

  • Excel or has excelled in at least one area (teaching, scholarship, service), i.e., far exceeds minimum  performance expected at that rank at The Citadel
  • Been a faculty at The Citadel for at least 5 years by the time of nomination.
  • Has had a substantial impact on The Citadel and its students

Nominations must be made by a current faculty and include a support letter from the nominator and one from a current or past student. The nomination letter should discuss how the faculty meets all three of the above criteria. All electronic nominations should be submitted to This email address is being protected from spambots. The School of Science and Mathematics Student award
(Undergraduate, Graduate)

Description:  all-around outstanding final-year student (one UG, one GS)

  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Examples of outstanding academic performance (e.g., consecutive Gold stars, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, other awards,...).
  • Involvement with extracurricular activities including, but not limited to, leadership activities.

Departments will nominate at most one from their department for each award and the electronic nomination will be forwarded to This email address is being protected from spambots. Nominations should include a cv, and a supporting letter (maximum one page) indicating how the nominee meets the above requirements.

Deadline: February 1 of each year.

Selection process:  All reviews and decisions will be made by the CASM Selection Committee (see below for members).

Awardees will receive a certificate and a check for $200 and be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards banquet during Corps week and also during Awards Convocation.


The CASM Selection Committee

The Selection Committee for all of the CASM awards (except for the student ones) is a subcommittee of the Citadel Science and Mathematics Council, the Advisory Board to the School of Science and Mathematics.
