Criteria

The CASM Distinguished Alumni and Friends award

The criteria for induction into The Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics include:

• National or international recognition of accomplishments in education, research, clinical practice, government or military service, and/or administration/management. The recipient is recognized by peers for the strength of their leadership in a scientific discipline, discoveries, teaching and publications.

• Professional Achievement and Career and/or Military Service Distinction: The recipient attained prominence through his or her efforts in commerce, industry, technology, scientific professions, the arts, education, government, military or other worthy endeavors that form a record of accomplishment impressive to alumni, the public and the nation.

• Service to Society and Community: The recipient exhibits integrity and a demonstrated commitment to community service by bettering the lives of others.

• Service and Support to the Citadel The recipient’s deeds and actions reflect the importance of their educational training, pride in their alma mater, and loyalty to SSM and the Citadel as demonstrated through their interest, actions and support of SSM students and activities.

The inductee must either have a science background or have contributed to science. We encourage nominations of exceptional alumni who are early in their career (within 15 years of graduating from The Citadel); their nominations will be evaluated separately from the more established nominees. At most, one early career inductees will be selected each year.

Awardees will receive an award and be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards banquet during Corps week.


 The CASM Faculty award

Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize an exceptionally successful faculty (current, past or retired) who has significantly impacted the students and/or The Citadel during their time at The Citadel. There are other annual college-wide faculty awards; this award is to recognize sustained achievements spanning a number of years.

  • Excel or has excelled in at least one area (teaching, scholarship, service), i.e., far exceeds minimum  performance expected at that rank at The Citadel
  • Been a faculty at The Citadel for at least 5 years by the time of nomination
  • Has had a substantial impact on The Citadel and its students

Nominations must be made by a current faculty and include a support letter from the nominator and one from a current or past student. The nomination letter should discuss how the faculty meets all three of the above criteria. All electronic nominations will be submitted to This email address is being protected from spambots. Selection process: Department heads will recommend a minimum of three nominees from all the nominations received to the dean. The dean will forward at least two of the nominations to the selection committee who will select one awardee. Same criteria apply to past performance of past/retired faculty. Deadline: May 31 of each year.

Awardees will receive an award and be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards banquet during Corps week.


The School of Science and Mathematics Student award
(Undergraduate, Graduate)

Description:  all-around outstanding final-year student (one UG, one GS)

  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Examples of outstanding academic performance (e.g., consecutive Gold stars, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, …)
  • Involvement with extracurricular activities including but not limited to leadership activities

Departments will nominate at most one from their department for each award and the electronic nomination will be forwarded to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , Assistant to the Dean by Feb 27. Nominations should include a cv, and a supporting letter indicating how the nominee meets the above requirements. The dean will make the final selection.

Awardees will receive a certificate and a check for $200 and be recognized at the annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics awards banquet during Corps week and also during Awards Convocation.


The CASM Selection Committee

The Selection Committee for all of the CASM awards (except for the student ones) is a subcommittee of the Citadel Science and Mathematics Council, the Advisory Board to the School of Science and Mathematics.
