The Shako recognizes two cadets for creative writing
The Shako, the Literary Magazine of The Citadel, recently announced the winners of its 4th annual creative writing awards, which are presented in honor of authors and graduates Pat Conroy and the late Robert Jordan.
Cadet Sarah Patricia Stierwalt of Fremont, Ohio is the 2010 recipient of the Conroy Award. Stierwalt is a criminal justice major. She received the award for her poem “Life.”
Conroy, a 1967 graduate, is the author of the best-selling novels, “The Great Santini,” “The Prince of Tides,” “The Lords of Discipline,” and “My Losing Season.” Conroy was on The Shako staff as a cadet and is a member of the South Carolina Hall of Fame.
Named for the science fiction writer Robert Jordan, the Jordan Award was presented to Cadet Magnus Hart of Frankenmuth, Mich. He received the award for a short story entitled “The Church of the Holy Spirit.”
Jordan, Citadel Class of 1974, is the author of the best-selling science fiction fantasy series “Wheel of Time.” Jordan wrote under the pen name James O. Rigney Jr. He passed away in 2007.
This year’s awards were judged by members of the English Department faculty. Stierwalt and Hart each will receive $250, a 48-hour pass, and an invitation to the annual English Department awards banquet. Their stories were published in this year’s edition of The Shako.
