Schmid named Truman Scholar

Cadet Douglas Schmid is one of 75 college juniors nationwide to receive a $30,000 fellowship for graduate study as a Truman Scholar. Schmid, a political science major with a concentration in international affairs, has a 3.9 GPA and has recently been named the 2006-2007 Charlie Company commander.

He plans to use the fellowship to study at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.

Schmid is a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and plans to be commissioned as a Marine officer upon graduation in 2007. He is a Citadel Scholar, a member of the honors program and the upcoming president of The Citadel's Toastmasters chapter. He is also a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, the cadet chorale, the varsity track team and holds a second degree Black Belt.

A native of Arlington, Wisc., Schmid has expanded his interest in political science by serving as a presidential fellow at the Washington, D.C.-based Center for the Study of the Presidency. He has worked as a South Carolina Fellow for Ohio Congressman Rob Portman and as an advertising and educational strategist for The Turner Foundation in Atlanta.

Schmid will join the other Truman Scholars for a leadership development program at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri in May.
