From blue to green: Citadel wins conference championship in Recyclemania

In this year’s Recylemania, the annual college competition to increase recycling efforts on campuses across the nation, The Citadel led Southern Conference colleges in the Per Capita Classic division by recycling 13.31 pounds per capita during the course of the eight-week competition.   The Citadel also made an impressive mark in South Carolina and in the nation, ranking:

third in the nation in colleges recycling Food Waste,

first in the Bottles and Cans category of the 10 colleges participating in South Carolina,

and third in the Per Capita Class in South Carolina.

From Feb. 8 to March 30, The Citadel recycled more than 53,000 pounds, preventing the release of 138 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.  That’s the equivalent of the energy consumption of 12 households or 27 automobiles in one year.

“We’re very excited about the results of this year’s competition,” said Oswaldo Nava who heads up The Citadel’s recycling program.  “By going green, we’re helping to make South Carolina a better place to live.”

This year The Citadel implemented a new food waste program in which food and organic waste was separated and sent to a composting facility, reducing the waste sent to the landfill.

The Citadel was one of 520 colleges competing this year.  During this 13th annual tournament, updated weekly rankings allowed schools to track their performance in eight categories—measuring their recycling rate; overall recycling by weight; lowest amount of total waste; and per capita recovery for paper, cardboard, cans and bottles, and food waste.
