The Citadel

The Military College of South Carolina

Message From The Department Chair

Welcome to the School of Engineering’s Department of Engineering Leadership and Program Management.  Our department was established specifically to support non-traditional students in the Charleston area.

All over this area, and indeed the nation, businesses are hungry for competent professionals who can lead their personnel in the execution of complex technical projects and programs.  This need is particularly acute in the Charleston area due to the rapid growth of technology and manufacturing and IT related businesses over the past 20 years.  We believe we can help fill that need for workforce development; not just for engineers but for non-engineers also.

Our programs offer working professionals the opportunity to obtain new skills and certifications that are in demand.  We do this through our Master of Science in Project Management (MSPM) degree, which was chartered in January 2010. This new Masters of Science degree was a result of the rapid growth of our Technical Project Management (TPM) Graduate Certificate program that started in 2006. Our 30 credit hour MSPM offers technical and non-technical electives to accompany the core requirements in project management and leadership. These electives include courses in program management, systems engineering management, leadership, business, information assurance, and civil/electrical/mechanical engineering.  We continue to develop new courses based on the needs of local industry, and currently offer 4-course graduate certificates in Technical Project Management (TPM), Technical Program Management (TPgM), and Systems Engineering Management (SEM).

The Citadel is dedicated to providing the educational opportunities for working professionals that will enable current and future project and program management professionals to positively influence their workplace.   Our Master of Science in Project Management (MSPM) mission is to equip a diverse professional student population with the applied knowledge, principled leadership and management skills needed to effectively lead an organization’s implementation of projects and multi-disciplinary initiatives.   We take this responsibility seriously, and have assembled a first rate, and experienced, group of faculty.  Our courses are taught in a culture that emphasises the Citadel’s historical commitment to the development of principled leaders.  The faculty and staff of this department are fully prepared to provide the same outstanding instruction at the graduate level that the Lowcountry has grown to expect from its other educational programs.

If you have suggestions as to how we can assist you or your company in the continuing education and professional development of your current and future leaders, or if you desire program information and assistance in developing your career objectives, please do not hesitate to contact me.

All the best,

Charles O. Skipper, PhD, PE, PMP
