Saul Adelman, Ph.D.

Saul J. Adelman, Professor of Physics has been on the faculty of The Citadel since 1978. He holds a B. S. in Physics with High Honors from the University of Maryland, College Park (1966) and a PhD in Astronomy from the California Institute of Technology (1972). His research interests are Astronomical Photometry and Spectrophotometry and high dispersion spectroscopy mainly of B, A, and early F Stars. He has observed extensively with the 100” telescope of Mt. Wilson Observatory in California, the 60” telescope of Palomar Observatory I California, the 0.9-m and coude feed telescopes of Kitt Peak Observatory in Arizona, and the 1.22-m telescope at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Canada as well as the International Ultraviolet Telescope. With colleagues he has been a Guest Observer on the Hubble Space Telescope. Further he was a partner in the Four College Automated Photometric Telescope Consortium which operated a 30” telescope in Arizona from 1990-2012. In the last few years he has been a participant in the Smarts Consortium to use the CHIRON Echelle Spectrograph on the 1.5-m telescope at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory in Chile.

Dr. Adelman is the author of 362 published scientific papers, 7 popular articles, and a book “Bound for the Stars”, the editor of 9 proceedings, and the presenter of many scientific talks. In 2011 he was awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution. He has been active in the International Astronomical Union, most recently as the President of Commission B6 Astronomical Photometry and Polarimetry (2015-18). He has played an important role in organizing several astronomical meetings. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi (served as Secretary Treasurer and President of The Citadel Chapter), Sigma Pi Sigma, and Sigma Xi (served as the President and the Vice President for The Charleston Chapter).

Dr. Adelman is a semi-professional nature photographer. He works with several cousins on his families’ history.
