Cadets sweep area Toastmasters competition

Cadets Shaun Hornilla, ’10, and Caleb Knowlton, ’11, scored a first for El Cid Toastdawgs last Saturday when they each took first place in their respective competitions at the Area 12 Spring Toastmasters Speaking Competition. This is the first time the campus club has entered both contests. For the next round, Hornilla and Knowlton will compete at the division level on March 7.

Area 12 is made up of five Toastmasters clubs. Hornilla won the International Speaking contest with his discussion of generational differences and military service. Knowlton won the Table Topics competition for his spontaneous two-minute talk on the question, "What is the best advice you have ever given or received?"

Knowlton, a civil engineering major from Fort Mill, S.C., has been an active member of El Cid Toastdawgs since his freshman year.

Hornilla, the November Company commander, earned his original credentials as a public speaker last year when he made it to the state level in Toastmaster competitions. He is a business administration major from Atlanta, Ga.

El Cid Toastdawgs offers Citadel cadets and graduate students opportunities to refine their public speaking skills. Student participation in the Toastmasters International organization is generously supported by donations from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dale Smith, '47.

The division competition will be held in the auditorium of the Charleston Public Library at 68 Calhoun Street on March 7 at 9:30 a.m. For more information about El Cid Toastdawgs, visit www.citadel.edu/oralcommunicationslab/toastmasters.html.
