Naval ROTC honors its outstanding students

Each year The Citadel’s Naval ROTC unit recognizes outstanding academic, military, athletic and extra-curricular accomplishments of rising midshipmen, active duty sailors and Marines and contract students through its Distinguished Naval Student Program.

To be selected student must be in good academic and military standing and must have a score better than 270 on either the Navy or Marine Corps physical fitness tests.

Awards were presented on Oct. 12 during Parents’ Weekend. Those students who received the Distinguished Naval Student Program award for the 2007- 2008 academic year were:

Sgt. Matthew Smith - Smith is earning a degree in criminal justice. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PFT score, successfully graduating from Officer Candidates School and being recognized by the Criminal Justice Department with Tracy Taylor Award for superior character and integrity. He has achieved the Dean’s List three times and the Gold Star List twice and is a member of the Marine Contingent and The Semper Fidelis Society. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Cadet Maj. Dirk A. Wooten - Wooten is earning a degree in psychology and a minor in Leadership Studies. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PRT score and achieving Gold Star’s four times and the Dean’s List six times. He has also been assigned to both the Commandant’s List and the President’s List. He is member of the Psi Chi National Psychology Honor Society. He is pursuing a commission as a surface warfare officer.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Robinson - Robinson is earning a degree in criminal justice. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PFT score and successfully graduating from Officer Candidates School. He has achieved the Dean’s List once and the Gold Star List twice and is a member of the Marine Contingent and The Semper Fidelis Society. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Cadet Capt. Christopher R. O’Brien - O’Brien is earning a degree in criminal justice. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PRT score and achieving the Dean’s List two times. He has also been assigned to the Commandant’s List. He is member of the Junior Sword Arch and the Summerall Guards. He is pursuing a commission as a Special Warfare Officer.

Cadet Capt. Harold Knupp - Knupp is earning a degree in political science. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a Marine Option Controlled Scholarship, achieving a 1st class PFT score, successfully graduating from the Officer Candidates School and being selected as a cadet company commander for the Corps of Cadets. He has achieved the Dean’s List twice and is a member of the Marine Contingent, The Semper Fidelis Society and the Summerall Guards. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Officer Candidate Joshua A. Senecal - Senecal is earning a degree in civil engineering. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PRT score and by achieving the Dean’s List three times. He is a member of the Pre-SEALs and served as the Pre-SEALs commanding officer. He is pursuing a commission as a special operations Officer.

Cadet Lt. Col. William Coleman - Coleman is earning a degree in civil engineering. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PFT score, successfully graduating from Officer Candidates School and being selected as a battalion commander in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. He has achieved the Dean’s List once and the Gold Star List four times and is a member of the Marine contingent and The Semper Fidelis Society. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Officer Candidate Chad R. Hutchins  - Hutchins is earning a degree in physical education (health and wellness). He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PRT score and by achieving Gold Stars two times and the Dean’s List two times. He is pursuing a commission as a surface warfare officer.

Cadet 1st Lt. Collin Bell - Bell is earning a degree in civil engineering. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a Marine Corps Option Controlled Scholarship, achieving a 1st class PFT score and successfully graduating from Officer Candidates School. He has achieved the Dean’s List twice and is currently the president of Semper Fidelis Society. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Officer Candidate Carlos M. Roe - Roe is earning a degree in political science. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PRT score and by achieving Gold Stars three times and Dean’s List four times. He is pursuing a commission as a surface warfare officer.

Cadet Capt. Matthew Stuhler - Stuhler is earning a degree in History. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a Marine Corps Option Controlled Scholarship, achieving a 1st class PFT score and successfully graduating from Officer Candidates School.
Additionally, he was selected to serve as a company commander in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. He has achieved the Dean’s List and is a member of the Marine Contingent, The Semper Fidelis Society and the Summerall Guards.
He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Officer Candidate Jeremy M. Forrer - Forrer is earning a degree in political science. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PRT score and by achieving the Dean’s List three times. He has been a member of the Pre-SEALs and served as both the Pre-SEALs and Navy battalion commanding officer. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine Corps officer.

Capt. Pvt. Arthur Hopkins - Hopkins is earning a degree in business administration. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning 1st class PFT score, successfully graduating from the Platoon Leaders Course, and achieving the Dean’s List three times. He is a member of the Marine Contingent and The Semper Fidelis Society. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Cadet Maj. Jason Jackson - Jackson is earning a degree in business administration. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PFT score, successfully graduating from the Platoon Leader’s Course and being chosen as the vice chairman of the Honor Committee. He is a member of the Marine Contingent and The Semper Fidelis Society. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Cadet Lt. Col. Edward Kay - Kay is earning a degree in political science (international politics and military affairs). He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PFT score, successfully graduating from Officer Candidates School and being selected as a battalion commander. He is a member of the Marine Contingent, The Semper Fidelis Society and the Honors Program. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Cadet 2nd Lt. Louis Batson - Batson is earning a degree in criminal justice with a minor in political science (international and military affairs). He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a Marine Option Controlled Scholarship, achieving a 1st class PFT score, successfully graduating from Officer Candidates School and being selected as the captain of the Regimental Band drum line. He has achieved the Dean’s List three times and is a member of the Marine Contingent and The Semper Fidelis Society. He is pursuing a commission as a Marine officer.

Staff Sgt Anthony Giardino - Giardino is earning a degree in criminal justice. He has distinguished himself both mentally and physically thus far while at The Citadel by earning a 1st class PFT score, successfully graduating from Officer Candidates School and being recognized by the Criminal Justice Department with Tracy Taylor Award for superior character and integrity.
