Citadel cadets coming to the aid of hurricane victims

Citadel cadets have launched a supply drive to help Florida's hurricane victims.

Cadets in the organizational problem solving and team building classes in the School of Business are calling on faculty and staff at The Citadel and businesses in the local community to donate supplies to help hurricane victims in Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County, Fla. The first truck of supplies will be loaded and driven to Florida on Monday, Oct. 25.

"Our goal is to fill a tractor trailer full of useful supplies and materials to send to St. Lucie County for distribution," said Cadet Brian Rister, a business administration major helping direct the cadet community service project.

Following the supply drive, about 50 cadets will travel to Fort Pierce, Fla., on Nov. 11 to help with cleanup efforts.

"We realize that a lot of people in Florida are in a bad situation and need our help," Rister said. "We believe that together we can make a significant difference in their lives."

           Cadets are collecting:

  • Baby items such as food, formula, diapers, wipes, and toiletries.
  • Personal toiletries, over-the-counter medications like aspirin, Band Aids, bandages, antiseptic and antibiotic ointment.
  • Construction items such as work gloves, hammers, saws, levels, crow bars, pry bars, cats claws, small power tools such as drills, circular saws and sanders, nails, deck screws, lumber, tarps and plywood.
  • Mattresses and box springs.
  • Nonperishable, canned, ready-to-eat and high-protein foods

All items should be new. No clothing please.

Items can be dropped off at three campus locations: Public Safety Department just inside the main gate, the School of Business Administration on the second floor of Bond Hall in Room 284, and the Commandant's Department on the second floor of Jenkins Hall.
