Citadel News Service

Sept. 2, 2004

The Citadel is closely monitoring the developments with Hurricane Frances. We have already taken steps to allow a speedy evacuation of the Corps of Cadets if state and local officials say that an evacuation is necessary.

With cadet safety foremost in our minds, all cadets have been assigned someone to travel with in the event an evacuation is necessary. In nearly all cases, that person is a fellow cadet in the same company.

It is the responsibility of cadets to email or call their parents to let them know where they will be traveling to in the event of an evacuation. No parents should drive to Charleston to pick up their sons or daughters.

While the current situation makes an evacuation seem unlikely, there will be no overnight or weekend passes this weekend in case an evacuation would be required during the weekend.

General leave for all classes will begin after last duty on Friday and Saturday and end at the normal times of 2400 hours for 4th Class and 0100 hours for upper class cadets. On Sunday, general leave for the upper classes begins at 0700 hours and ends at 1950 hours. For 4th Class general leave on Sunday begins at 1000 hours and ends at 1755 hours.

In order to ensure communication with all members of the Corps of Cadets should Hurricane Frances change course and further endanger the Greater Charleston area, weekend leaves and overnights are cancelled. The Commandant will reexamine this policy, based on the status of Hurricane Frances as the weekend progresses.
