Summerall
Guards to march in Columbia Christmas parade The Summerall Guards will march in the 51st annual Carolina Carillon Holiday Parade at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, in downtown Columbia. The 61-member silent precision drill platoon from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is made up of seniors who have competed in a rigorous physical training process to test physical stamina and drill proficiency.
The
platoon was created in 1932 and named for General Charles P. Summerall,
former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and president of The Citadel from
1931 until 1953. The platoon's purpose is to exemplify, through a unique
series of movements based on the old German close order drill and performed
to a silent count, the exactness and thoroughness with which The Citadel
cadet is trained.
