Col. Barton named Employee of the Year

The Citadel Employee Recognition Committee has recommended and President Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds has approved the selection of Lt. Col. Pamela Barton from the Commandant of Cadets Department as the 2005 Citadel Employee of the Year.

The selection was made on the highest point tally compiled on six nominees in the areas of: "performing beyond the call of duty," extra effort to exemplify professionalism and outstanding contributions to The Citadel, fellow employees and the community. Mrs. Barton is a tactical officer in 1st Battalion and has been at The Citadel for six years.

Barton distinguishes herself by immersing herself in all facets of cadet life. She is a mentor, counselor and coach for our cadets, as well as an active instructor for the Commandant’s Department. As a company TAC, she works continually to assist cadets in adapting to life here at The Citadel. She counsels freshman who have trouble transitioning to life as a fourth classmen, guides upperclassmen with academic challenges and helps seniors find jobs after graduation. Much of this work is done on her own time, coming in on weekends and working late during the week. She avails herself to any cadet who needs her time.

Barton exemplifies the characteristics of outstanding leadership, professionalism, and dedication to duty our institution holds dear. She goes “beyond the call of duty” on a daily basis, putting the needs of her charges before herself. Her work will benefit our college for a long time to come.

Runners up were Capt. Robert L. Shipman, Public Safety, first runner up; and Daisy Drayton, Physical Plant, second runner up'. Other finalists wre Verdell Rouse, Civil and Environmental Engineering; Mary Lynch, School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and Eulonda Rewis - School of Business Administration.

A reception honoring The Employee of The Year and all nominees will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 22 in the Regimental Commander's Riverview Room. The campus is invited. A parade in honor of Barton and retiring Citadel employees begins at 4:20 p.m.
