Annual yard sale is Saturday
The
Citadel Women's Club will hold its Annual Stadium Sale from 8 a.m. to
noon Saturday, May 29, at the Altman Center in the end zone at Johnson
Hagood Stadium on Hagood Avenue.
The
2004 sale will feature many bargains, including cadet uniform items, cleaning
supplies, furniture, dishes, hardware, computers, lamps, sporting goods,
shoes, vacuums, books, irons, fans and bric-a-brac. There is also a plant
sale and a bake sale.
"We
have more items this year than ever. We even have a bathroom sink!"
said John Carter, one of the many Citadel volunteers who work year round
to organize the annual yard sale. "The sale items include discards
from cadets as well as donated items from the community."
Every
year people line up early for the sale and the many bargains, but no early
birds are allowed.
Proceeds
from the yard sale go to scholarships for Citadel cadets. Every year the
list of items for sale grows and so do the number of students who receive
educational assistance while attending The Citadel.
The
Annual Stadium Sale was started nine years ago when it was noticed that
cadets throw away many useable items at the end of each academic year.
"Many of the cadets live very far from here and cannot take these
things home with them on the plane.," volunteer Margie Dick said.
"Others are beginning a new career in either the military or the
business world and will no longer need these things, so they are just
thrown away."
The
Citadel Women's Club takes these items, cleans them and sells them - the
ultimate recycling!
