Wendell Willkie to visit The Citadel

          Wendell L. Willkie II, associate counsel to former President Ronald Reagan, will visit The Citadel this month as part of the West Chair Speakers Series.          

          Willkie is senior vice president, general counsel and secretary
of Mead Westvaco Corp. He formerly was general counsel and chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Education, and under President George H.W. Bush he was general counsel and acting deputy secretary of the Department of Commerce. In the 1990s he was a fellow in legal policy and international trade at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C.

           Willkie will speak at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, in Bond Hall Room 165. Willkie's visit is free and open to the public.

           Willkie is a graduate of Harvard College, the University of Chicago and Oxford University. He holds degrees in social studies,
modern history and law.

          In his role as the John C. West Professor of Government and International Relations, former U.S. ambassador Philip Lader brings to The Citadel and the Lowcountry a distinguished panel of guest speakers. The John C. West Professorship is endowed by former S.C. Gov. John C. West, a 1942 Citadel graduate, and The Citadel Foundation
