Andrew John Mazur, a member of the Class of 2001 and a Greenville County (S.C.) sheriff's deputy, died from a gunshot wound he received last night while attempting to place a 19-year-old suspect under arrest. According to The Greenville News, the sheriff's office charged Mark Herring with murder in Mazur's death. Herring took his own life using the deputy's gun during a showdown with officers early this morning. Mazur, who was known to friends and classmates as Drew, was a popular member of the Class of 2001 and served on the senior class board of directors. A native of Panama City, Fl., Mazur had a double major in criminal justice and psychology. He was a member of Golf Company and the Summerall Guards, The Citadel's elite drill team. Mazur was 24. He and his wife, Bryce, lived in Mauldin.
