Corps of Cadets gets live bulldog mascot

          He's here!

An active and very playful 10-week-old English bulldog puppy that is The Citadel's first live mascot in many years arrived on campus this week. The 15-pound pup is a gift from the Class of 2003.

The as yet unnamed puppy will live on campus and will make his public debut at Friday's (Aug. 29) dress military parade of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which begins at 3:45 p.m. on Summerall Field.

The English bulldog has been the established Citadel mascot since 1908.

The new live mascot will reside with and be cared for by Mike Groshon, assistant athletic director for facilities and equipment at The Citadel. Later this fall, cadets will vote on a name for the puppy. Cadets also will help care for him.

No taxpayer dollars were used in the acquisition of the live mascot. Likewise, no taxpayer dollars will be used for its care or housing. Instead the costs will be paid for through fundraisers, cadet class dues and with contributions from The Citadel Alumni Association and The Brigadier Foundation. Dr. John Bradford, Class of 1977, of Charleston, is donating veterinary services.
