Since his election as governor, the Honorable Mark Sanford has been a tireless crusader for government reform, better economic opportunities and improvements in the quality of life in the Palmetto State. As South Carolina's 115th governor, he has demonstrated leadership and creativity in guiding the state through some formidable challenges.
A husband and father of four sons, Governor Sanford understands the challenges facing South Carolina families and has worked to make government more accountable and accessible to ordinary citizens. One of his first priorities has been an extensive review of state government, looking for ways to improve efficiency and save money. Furthermore, he has gone to extraordinary lengths to listen to the people of South Carolina by holding open-door meetings at his office in Columbia and conducting neighborhood office hours across the state, welcoming those with concerns or ideas for improvements.
Governor Sanford's political career began in 1994 when he was elected to Congress with no prior political experience - a testimony to his leadership and the widespread appeal of his platform as a taxpayer's advocate. While a Congressman, he served on the Joint Tax Committee and the International Relations Committee and was ranked number one in the entire Congress by Citizens against Government Waste. The National Taxpayers Union and Taxpayers for Common Sense also praised his frugality. Governor Sanford relinquished his seat in 2001, validating his stance on term limits for elected officials.
Governor Sanford holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business from Furman University and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. Prior to entering politics, he worked in real estate, finance and investments in New York and South Carolina.
