The Citadel awards four honorary degrees

           The Citadel Board of Visitors presented honorary degrees to four people with outstanding records of public service, philanthropy and leadership during the South Carolina Corps of Cadets commencement exercise today.

           Approximately 380 cadets and active duty military students took part in graduation ceremonies in McAlister Field House. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford delivered the commencement speech.

           This year's honorary degree recipients are:

• Mark Sanford, governor of South Carolina
• Matthew James Perry Jr., U.S. District Court judge, civil rights pioneer
• Robert Anthony Daniel, war veteran, philanthropist, Citadel supporter
• Joseph Dawson Shine, attorney, second African American Citadel graduate

           "The Citadel is proud to recognize the accomplishment of each of these men with the presentation of honorary degrees," said Citadel President Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds. "Their contributions to business, their community, The Citadel, the state of South Carolina and the nation exemplify the high standards and ideals The Citadel cherishes."
