The Citadel has appointed Alex McMillan as an endowed professor to the school of business.
McMillan, the former CEO of Harris Teeter, will serve as the W. Frank Hipp Distinguished Chair in Business Administration. In this role, McMillan will teach an undergraduate and graduate class and recruit speakers.
"Congressman McMillan will serve as an important addition to the faculty of the school of business," said Citadel President Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds. " The knowledge he brings to our school, both by his service in the Congress and his accomplishments in the business world, will provide his students with invaluable opportunities to learn from his experiences."
McMillan received his undergraduate degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Masters of Business Administration from the University of Virginia. He was CFO of Ruddick Corp., CEO of Harris Teeter and served on a number of boards, including First Union, the University of Virginia Darden School and Union Theological Seminary.
He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984 from North Carolina's 9th District and held office until 1994. He served on many committees, including small business, banking, finance and urban affairs, joint economic, energy and commerce and budget. McMillan was also involved with several task forces, including leadership for health care reform and president's commission for entitlement reform. He served as a delegate to the North Atlantic Assembly of NATO and as vice chairman of the economic committee and sub-committee on East-West Economic Cooperation.
Since leaving the House, McMillan headed the McMillan Co. and served on a number of boards including Interstate/Johnson Lane, the Scottish Bank, the Civil War Preservation Trust, and the Concord Coalition.
Francis W. Hipp endowed the Hipp chair in 1983 for his father, W. Frank Hipp. Francis Hipp attended The Citadel from 1929 to 1931. He founded The Liberty Corp., which consists of Liberty Life Insurance Co. and Cosmos Broadcasting Co.
